Windshield

Does anybody make a new replacement windshield for 914's? Or is there any old stock storehoused away somewhere? I would prefer not to put in a used one since they tend to get a little dinged and scratched over time.

Depends on where you live. In California, the mobile windshield repair guys are able to get them quite easily. Mine was about $125.00 installed, about three years ago.

I live in the San Francisco area and had mine replaced by a mobile glass service a couple of months ago for $150. I am very satisfied with the fit and the work.

The best replacment glass is made by PPG or Sigla. I had mine replaced with a shaded windshield and it was a perfect fit. Apparently other glass manufacturers glass doesn't fit quite right. I've been told it has something to do with the curve of the
glass not being correct.

Thanks guys for the info... I talked with only one auto glass place so far, they quoted me $200 for the PPG glass, so I will shop around. One thing this shop told me was that they would only replace the glass if I bought new crome window molding because the old stuff was too brittle. Did any of your installers require this? The crome molding is a little pricey and if I can avoid buying it I will.

I'd be tempted to go with that shop. If they know that the trim is so fragile, they've done 914s before. Experience is a good thing.

The clips don't always break, if you use the "right tool" to remove them. But they still do break moderately often. New clips are insurance that you won't have to leave the job half-done.

If they are any good at their job they should be able to re + re the trim without any problem. The only thing you should require is the plastic clips, I think it takes 19.
Don't be too upset by $200 I live in Victoria BC, Canada and the glass place here quoted $650 Canadian, about $350 of yours. Thank you insurance. My $50 well spent.

Just my $0.02. I just purchased a windshield from a local glass company for my 911. Through a favor from a friend, I was able to get the "corporate" discount. Price was just over $200 Canadian. The guy at the glass shop showed me the various prices. "Wholesale" was just over $300 and "Retail" over $900. Guess which price the insurance company pays. Needless to say, I don't carry glass coverage anymore.
