Getting a paint job
Today I took a day off work to work on my car. I have done or had done just about everything I can think of mechanically and have nothing left but the body work. So I am sending it off to the body shop in the next day or two. The shop has a very good reputation for restoration work but it's going to cost me dearly. The wife is already compaining. I stripped everything off the car but the windshield moulding (i was afraid of breaking those little clips). I took some pictures after I got done and will post them later. I can't wait till it's finished so I can post the after pics.

I'd go ahead and take off the windshield trim and just get new clips from Pelican. It will let the windshield come out and the lower corners can be preserved. Good luck.

robby,
Are you going for the same color? That's one of the neatest blue's, and the 914 looks very good in it - especially with the chrome and black accents. Be sure to post some pics when its done! Enjoy,

Remove the windshield. The clips are cheap and you can get a really clean job. You will hear yourself saying when all is said and done," darn now I wish I would have taken theat windshield out".
You can hire it done or do it your self. Not hard to do just be careful and take your time. Craig C. Laughlin CAMP914 |

Yep, pull the windshield trim, any rubber seals still remaining, the striker plates...basically anything that you can reasonably get off and still hope to get back on later.
If you will be having the sills and jams painted, also be sure to pull the carpet back. Also make sure the shop masks off your Fuchs & tires carefully, or else put on some junk wheels & tires beforehand. Basically, any paint you can avoid getting into undesired places now, is worth it later...overspray can be a real PITA to clean up when it gets onto vinyl/rubber/cloth in particular. I hafta say, from these pics the current paint really doesn't look that bad!

I am going to let the professionals remove the windshield trim and the front targa weatherstrip. They are going to weld in new door jambs. It will be painted the original color. These pics do not show the dozens of small dents and nicks. There is absolutely no shine left on the hood or trunk either. I trust them to do a first class job for what they are charging me and I've seen their work. Now if they will just get started!

replace the lower windshield seal. the windshield must be removed to accomplish this, you will not have a better opportunity.

What color is the car and is it an original color? Kinda reminds me of my Techno Blue New Beetle. I hope your paint job turns out great after all the mechanical work you've done. Time to enjoy driving the car!

Thanks for telling me the color, I was just about to see if I could look it up. It is a 1975 model.

Both the Alaska and Ancona blues are great colors -- especially whith black accents. I miss mine (Ancona). However, Olymic Blue is growing on me.
Did the car originally have a black interior? Mine was white. Scott |

My car has a black interior with cloth inserts in the seats. I have never seen a white interior.

It was a very uncommon option on the 75-76 cars. When in good shape, it looks pretty sweet...

After a 7 month wait in the body shop for my turn, they started on my car last week. Here are some pictures of the work so far.
