I decided to attack this myself....
Great news:No evidence of rust anywhere ! I feel fortunate to found a very solid car. Good news: Oil and filter are now fresh.
Bad news: I have a small gas leak....but its intermittent
Trying to familiarize myself to the engine compartment...awkward to work in. Any hints ? Seems almost like if I remove the rear trunk lid, there would be easier access. I did notice under the battery, there are new steel gas lines with fresh hose. I am not a fan of the worm-gear type clamps, and I have a bunch of screw type, so I will replace them....next weekend.

Gas smell or gas leak? Lines to expansion tank and fuel filler cap are suspects if a smell, more than a leak. You may be able to renew the gasket for cap without replacing. It uses the same cap as a late 60's bus or bug, can't remember which

Well it's been more than 2 years since i have acquired this 1.8 914, and I have to admit, while its not the most powerful Porsche, it's awfully fun to drive.
The list of items addressed has grown substantially even though the car was pretty solid when i bought it.

Since selling the 930 earlier this year, the 914 gets all of my attention now, and as a result, the 914 got these repairs done in the last 6 months....
New brakes...rotors, calipers, pads, and master cylinder
New fuel injection....4 new bosch injectors, new seals, all new braided fuel hose and clamps. I was then able dial in afr's on the L-Jet that eliminated surging high idle
Powder coated wheels and new Michelin 195/65/15 tires
Re-sprayed quarters and rear trunk, new taillight lenses, removed rear bumperettes
New windshield and seal
Re-built starter and alternator Now charges @ 14.2 V and starts every time
Lastly....age appropriate vanity plate

I am done for now.....just drive and enjoy

Signal Orange was my first 914. I bought it is '72. It was a 70, 1.7. Loved that car. Guy that had it before me smoked a pipe. On rare occasion when I smell someone smoking a pipe - I think of that car........When I am in Chatsworth I will look for this car on the road!

Thanks for the comments !

Completed a few interior details recently, both front seats were recovered (just on the bolsters) along with the center console. Since I had speakers in the door already, I opted for something more correct for a speaker cover.

You may see this on the road in Chatsworth or other parts of the west San Fernando Valley, mostly on weekends.

Love this car!

I drove a friend's 914 last night, the first time I had been in a 914 for awhile. It was a 1974 as well, but it was a 2.0. I had forgotten how great these cars are! I like the term "slow enough to be fun."
It definitely applies to these cars. This one is a peach, and the transmission was great--better than the 915 in my 911.

Hi, where did you get your l-jet dialed? I am having high/low air flow issues under idle myself.

Ed,
I dialed in the fuel injection myself. I use a Innovate LM2 to measure the AFRs from the exhaust pipe. There is a screw on the air flow meter. It could be capped. in either case small turns make a big difference in AFR's One other thing, make sure your timing is correct first

Yet another update for my 914. This was long over due....... A leather wrapped steering wheel courtesy of Donald Le at Dallas Custom Steering wheel ! The stitching is impeccable and the feel is amazing.

What a great find. Congratulations. I say keep the script. 100%. The black looks so good against the orange.
