being a novice with rebuilding engines, what is your opinion on the following engine specs. engine is for street
2.0 D-jet FI euro 2.0 p/c web cam #73 grind SSHE Bursch exhaust main reason i ask is that someone suggested that with a stock rebuild i didn't need to go with the web cam (cam+lifters ~ $300) but could go with a stock cam. i wanted stock with a bit more performance and normal assembly. your suggestions are appreciated |

Engine
Hello,
My understanding is that is a very good plan... I am also looking to rebuild a 74 2.0 and stick with 2.0 D-jet...My undertanding is the 2.0 P/C and Euro Cam will work fine with D-Jet and the bursch is nicer than stock but not as loud as other more radical exhuast such as SuperTrapp... Also I think the output will be right around 125-135 with a good set of headers so I am guessing 125 with Heat Exchangers... Also consider a lightened Flywheel..My understanding that this engine combo with lightened Flywheel is awesome...not to mention well placed in the PCA AutoX... Also you may consider an engine already built on this site with approx. 150HP for 2500.00 which is not a bad price.. Hope I could Help a Little, Ron I have found that Rich Bontempi-In the southwest was very helpful but unfortunately I have lost his number!

I'd be very cautious of a 150 HP "fresh rebuilt" motor for $2500... It's easy to claim big numbers, and it's not too awfully difficult to cut enough corners to bring the cost down to that level, but I don't think it's very easy to make that kind of power for that kind of money--and make enough profit to make it worthwhile. Just maybe, if you do all the work yourself... Just maybe.
There is no "euro cam", BTW. There are European-spec pistons, which will give you 8:1 compression if everything else is stock, but there is really only one stock cam grind for all VW Type 4 motors. There is some debate about how well the D-jet can be made to work with the Web #73 grind. I have found some very knowledgeable people arguing each side, pro and con. Dunno myself. I would guesstimate that an 8:1 motor with Web #73 would get you about 110 HP. Headers can bump that up another 10, maybe 15 HP. There are tons of details that can make or break the motor, though. BTW, even if you go with the stock grind, get it (and your lifters!!) from Webcam. They seem to be about the only ones any more who can reliably make a Type 4 cam that lasts. Quite a few cams have gone flat even during engine break-in.... --DD

being on the up hill side of the learning curve, i'm not going for big numbers in the HP area but building a motor the "right way". i don't want to do a bunch of changes but maybe did want to experiment with the web cam #73 and lifters. just wanted to know if the components are compatible, and not fighting each other. heck, any HP is more than my present 76HP 1.8L L-jet! not that i'm complaining, i did drive it to work this am.
