Just bought a 1970 914-6 with 71S engine

After many years of looking for one, a friend and I bought a 1970 914-6 from an estate. It is a pretty original car but the original engine was swapped for a 1971 911S engine long ago. So far the widow has provided scant paperwork so I don't know the original engine number. Now that Porsche will not provide the number unless you know it on a COA I'm not sure how to find out so we can look for it. Kardex's don't go past 1969 so that isn't an option either. Anyone know a way?

Unless you can find old paperwork for it, I don't think you're going to be able to find the original engine serial number.

If you have the VIN and buy a COA from Porsche, it should have the Engine number listed.. I am pretty sure my COA has an engine number on it.

No Porsche quit supplying the engine numbers on COA's unless you tell them what it is and they will verify it. Made the change this year.

Didn't realize that they just made the change. I got my COA only last year.

We plan to flush the fuel system and get it running first. Hasn't run in many years. It only has 1000 miles on a complete rebuild by a proficient local builder for over 40 years. Then go through the brakes, etc. It also needs a thorough cleaning from top to bottom.

Although not original, that 71S motor should be blast to drive with nearly double the horsepower of the original. 71S is a 2.2 liter 9.8:1 engine making 180hp? Does if have carbs (most likely) or the correct mechanical fuel injection? Enjoy. Where in Oregon are you located?

The engine was rebuilt 1000 miles ago by Dick Elverud, locally famous for building some of the fastest racing Porsche engines for the past 40 years. He also built many 2.5, short stroke street engines by using new 2.7 P&C's on 2.0 and 2.2 engines. I expect this engine to be one of those. I had one of his 2.5's in my 68S and the torque was incredible - a very fun engine that surprised many people in "fast" cars. the 914-6 has Weber carbs on it.

Sorry, I don't have very many pictures yet. We have been working on a couple other Porsches. We are done with the one and about halfway through cleaning up the other one so we hope to put this one on the lift in the next couple weeks and really see what we bought. Right now it's pushed to one side of my friends shop. But here's another picture when we bought it.

You scored one of the best S motors ever built. Have a good friend who had a 914 with a 71S motor with E cams and it is fast and a blast to drive. He sold the car 5 years ago and regrets it to this day. You have one great motor, enjoy it and drive the piss out of it. After you do, you won’t even consider putting the original anemic 6 back in, unless you are just in it to be correct and make some coin.
