Should I run a thermostat??

Hi. Just wondering if I should run the thermostat in my 1911 engine. It runs 40 idf's, and a stock oil cooler. A friend of mine that's had 20+ years of experience with 914's said to me that he runs without the thermostat, without the flaps, and without the bottom side mounted cylinder tin with out any problems.

The weather in Bakersfield gets 'Africa Hot' in the summer. The winter doesn't get too cold. At the most, it'll get in the low 40's. I respect my friend's opinion, but I'd like to hear from you folks too. I assembled the shroud last night, but I might be inclined to take the flaps out now before I put the engine in.
