914 race car for sale... see link for pics
I have a 1400lb (when race ready) 914 race car that needs to go. It is fully caged and legal for PCA club racing and PCA time trial. Custom fiberglass 935 style front nose complete with the mould to accomodate the 16x10 Fuchs centered 2 piece wheels. IMSA style rear flares to accomodate the 16x12 Fuchs centered 2 piece wheels. The car has Bilstein front struts with JFZ calipers and SC rotors. The rear has SC front calipers and SC rear rotors. The car has been extensively lightened with only the bare minimum left for club racing rules. I have everything to put this car back on the track.. just dont have the time with my other race cars taking up any time I might have. The floor pans have some surface rust but could be easily knocked down with a small hand grinder. Oh.. I will throw in a spare side shifter and I have the matching hood.
Please visit the "Click here for pics" link below. Feel free to email me for more details. 3000$ CLICK HERE FOR PICS 100's of references available upon request (good and bad ones..just ask) B Last edited by Brad Roberts; 10-14-2002 at 11:08 PM.. |

Brad,
Couple questions on your roller if I may? What class did the car previously run in? How long ago? What motor? If it had the six does it have the 6 mount and tank? How bad is the rust in the floorpan? How about the longitudinals? Is the chassis square? Does the cage run through the back of the car and is it triangulated? Was it hit and fixed anywhere? Have the pickup points been relocated? Are the rims straight? what size pad is on the front JFZ calipers? Are they the same size as the Wilwood ultralights? What about tie rods steering rack etc? Anything else you can tell me about the car would be helpful. I'm looking to run with POC again. Thanks in advance. Justin |

Hey Justin..
You asked some good questions.. it obvious you know what your looking for (which is good) The car ran in a local time trial class called "M" I dont recall what the class limits where. The car was last ran in 1996. The car used a 2.3 liter 4cyl engine with drysump and Webers. The rust is minimal. It knocks down easily with a 80 grit 90degree die grinder. None of it is through. The pans are solid. The chassis is 100% straight and has never been wrecked. The cage does NOT run through to the back (good eye) This is an easy fix, we have done 15 cages this year in 914's and could easily add bars from the main hoop back to the front of the shock towers. It does have a complete chassis stiff kit installed. The pickup points have not been relocated (we do this normally, but this car was built by AutoPower many moons ago) The rims are straight (I had them checked because I was going to keep them and use them on my tube frame 914 but they didnt clear my Coleman calipers and rotors. The calipers do use the same size pad as the Ultralight (you have done this before). I would update the steering setup with heim joints. Oh.. 150$ for delivery to SD or LA. (I have a customer car to pick up in SD and you too can split my cost of 300$) Let me know if you want more pics.. I can shoot more this Sat. I will be at SSI on Thursday and Friday of this week, but back at the race shop on Sat/Sunday. B |

Thanks for the reply Brad.
My failing eyes make it hard to discern the cage structure. Has the cage been properly triangulated and picked up everything it needs to up front. If not what needs to be done? Re: bodywork = Do you have the complete fiberglass front end, hood, cowl etc? How about a roof? or is it just the pieces shown and the mold? There is a wing in one of the pictures but I cannot see if it is and how it is mounted? Can you confrim if it running the torsion bar front? If so any idea what rate it has? Are those trailing arms boxed? Does your sideshifter have the LSD? Do you know the gears in it? I don't see much of the tub cut away? Does it have the original firewall or has anything been replaced with aluminum? To save us both time here's what I'm looking for. I've got a motor to put into a competitive chassis. I've got a complete tube frame for sale close to me but it has little else. If yours comes with most of the bits so that I can install my six and get it on the track them I'm interested. Since I cannot see this thing up close...If you were to put this car on the track and club race it what needs to be done? Feel free to email some more picks in detail the front and rear of the car. Thanks in advance. Justin |

Ok, I'll bite.
I got the picture link to work and if this is 1400 pounds, what does a 1200 pound 914 look like? Is it the car that P.L. Newman wrecked at Lime Rock?

You cut the rest of the fenderwells out... cut the floorboards out... cut the targa bar off (run fiberglass) cut the OE firewall out.

Ok, Justin:
Everything in the front is good as far as bracing goes. (I'll shoot some more pics). Body work: It is straight, but the current nose needs to be repaired or a new one laid up. It has no top (no windshield hoop) I do have a hood that is painted to match. Wing: There is a front wing and a rear wing. The rear wing is mounted through the rear trunk (skin) on 2 poles. The car has torsion bars and not coil overs (no idea on the rate) The trailing arms are not boxed (I dont do this anyway) The sideshifter is just a core... something to get started with. The firewall for the front is gone. Essentially it has inner fenderwells from the strut back (nothing forward except the floorpan to hold the control arms) I'll save you lots and lots of time: Check the rules.. rumor has it you cannot run any open cockpit cars that dont already have a logbook in PCA club racing. (I just went through PCA tech with a open cockpit 914) It has a logbook prior to the rule change. This chassis would work great for your six. We can weld in the few tubes I personally think it could use and weld in the 6 mount. B |

Cut the windshield and about everything else is carbon fiber. I found out this secret by accident, I bought a bunch of parts from a guy, who as it turned out, builds custom carbon fiber parts. It is a 4 banger, that I was told by the team's head tech that he could build me one for $12K, and I thought that the $6K I put into one was bad.

It is not that I don't believe that someone said it is 1200 pounds, but I don't think you could get one that low. It would have to be a very minimal, complete tube frame car. I look at the one Brad is selling and don't see where you could get another 200 pounds out of it.

You might get another 80-100 out of it. NO way you are going to get 200 out of it.
Byron, I spend 6k on our 4 banger suspension to run in a class just above the I stock class. We reguarly blow 20-25k on 4cyl cars. If you want to lead the pack..... B |
