Is the back axle the same for the 944 and the 944S???
Just thought I'd check before I order one.
Also, what exactly does a "rear axle" entail??? I looked hard at mine and can see what looks like two smaller axles that run out of the middle hump. Does the rear axle run from wheel to wheel or is there stops inbetween (well, I know there are stops, but is it a solid piece or two pieces??). I ask because I found a re-built unit for only $149 Canadian with a $70 core. It's $800 from Porsche for a new one (no core). That price jump worries me. Just want to make sure I'm getting the right part. They called it the rear axle "spline" from where I ordered it, but said it came with two joints. I dunno..... 944S Boyeee

that's an Axle assembly.. or 2 axles, left and right side.. it's easier to replace than repacking and messing with the cv's, you just pull the axles and drop in the new ones... and you have more NEW parts instead of the new old mix...

If they are rebuilt from a place that knows what they are doing ...thats a hell of a deal.......
You can try swapping left to right to try and extend the life on them..... Either way I would not spend $800 from the dealer thats B.S.

They are coming in from Vancouver (where it seems all the Porsche parts come from when I order them) to this place called "Wilson's All Make" in Halifax.
I'm tellin' ya - if you do want parts, check out this Wilson's place and find out where they get their stuff from. EVERY time I buy parts from this place, I have to call back twice to make sure they didn't make a mistake. Like I mentioned before.......I really am starting to think this place could be a laundromat! So, no difference between the two cars??? The axle "spline" is the right part? 944S Boyeee 944S Boyeee

The axle is $149 with a $15 shipping fee and I get back $70 when I return my old axle.
So, after all is said and done.....I'll be paying around $110-120 Canadian for the part (about $60-70 American)....and two hours max to change it out (that is what the mech. said). The labor is $40 per hour, so all together I'm looking at around $200 total to repair this CV joint problem. Not too shabby! 944S Boyeee

I would guess that $149 is for mostly used parts. Probably new boots inspect and repack the CV joints. That is probably enough though. CV joints can last the life of the car if they are repacked once in a while and not abused. I paid about $300 for new ones. Only one company makes them LobroMolly. The shop ordered mine and they came in a LobroMolly box. The ones from the dealership were about $800 but they cam in a Porsche box. I guess that Porsche cardboard box is a $500 option. It is easy to replace them I did it in a couple of hours. I would rather buy tools than pay my mechanic. If you are not too hard on your car I would stick with the $149 axel.

ae1969....
I just got off the phone with them....... Those re-built power steering racks are pretty costly, eh? $1351.00 for a re-man rack. $1860.00 for an OEM one. Control arms are $133.50 each. All Canadian prices, of course!!! Don't know if those prices are good or not, let me know....... 944S Boyeee

The racks are cheaper in the states..... about 250-400 U.S rebuilt
But the control arms are flippen cheap.... Cheapest I found so far is 190 U.S..... I am assuming I have to send a core back.... I might need you to set me up.... Are these guys for real????? That seems really cheap for a control arm thats like $100 U.S? Thanks!

The steering rack is pretty pricey - but the control arms are not. That is what it's like with this place. Some parts are "average" in price, but others are usually a noticable amount cheaper.
I wonder where this place is in Vancouver that they get the parts from?? I'll be picking up my axle from there this afternoon. I'll reply back and let people know what kind it is, etc. ae1969 - let me know if you want the control arms from here - I'll check what the procedure is. I'll ask about having the parts sent to Edmonton and about how you would return the old control arms. I called just now and the parts "lady" (yes, the parts person is female and she knows her stuff) is out. The guy who answered suspects you don't have to send the old arms back, as there is no core on that item. Could be a straight up deal where you pay over the phone with Visa or something and they could get them sent to you. I'll check. 944S Boyeee

you do know that later 944's with the alloy rear control arms use a different axle assembly right? i can't remember when the change came about, i think it was with the '86 cars. but the early ones won't fit. make sure you're getting the later ones quoted to you for your 88, they are longer. hope it works out.

I did say it was an 86. They had 6 different listings for Power Steering racks (not for the 86, but the 944 model).
When I asked about control arms, she said, "Tie Rods????", then followed up by saying, "No, wait - I can see here it is all one piece", so she got the right part I assume. I'm telling you - I really think this place isn't interested in selling parts for profit as much as it may be interested in moving as much product as possible so they can ring in "extra" cash. Either way......however the prices are set, I likey! ae1969 - perhaps you could give me the part number for the control arms - I will double check with them. 944S Boyeee
