Volt guage
Well it looks like I may have purchased a bad alternator. This morning while driving back from returning the core the volt guage shot up to 14 then down to 10, its now sitting at ten. I don't appear to have any power issues, the battery still cranks strong, and I can rull all of the accessories including the A/C and nothing dims out or stops working.
So either my guage is going nuts, or the new alternator is bad. BTW I am getting 11.66 volts across the battery terminals while the engine is running. Guage or alternator?

I think that you should be getting a lot more voltage than that, with the engine running, at least 13.8 to 14 volts.
The battery is alone 12 volts DC so you need a lil higher voltage just to charge it, plus current. But I'm no expert... I;ll check mine soon and let you know what my voltage and current is..

Yea that sounds logical. Of course its Sunday so the parts store can not get another until Monday, then by Tuesday we are supposed to have 20" of snow on the ground.
So it look like back under the cover it goes.

The Voltmeter in the dash is not always accurate. You must take a reading at the battery to verify the Alternater output. As long as the voltage is 12.5 to 15 the alternator's voltage regulator is probably doing its job. The problem for charging systems are sometimes related to Battery Cable condition(internal corrosion) or dirty battery terminals.

If the voltage accross the battery teminals is 11.66 volts. Your battery is probably going bad. It is fairly common for the battery to die with or shortly after the alternator. Replace the battery and recheck the voltage.

Where did you buy the alternator at? I would take the car to them and see if they can test it,if your only getting 11.66 across the battery while running I would say it's a bad alt.,but I would have the battery load tested.
Good luck

Here are some interesting items of information, the original alternator was actually charging fine, it had a bad bearing.
I also decided to spend the 30 min pulling the thing this afternoon and it smells like an "electrical fire" inside. So I took it back, and since I removed the pulley they could not bench test it. Anyway they have another on order that should arrive tomorrow. Also thanks for the suggestion I will have the battery check tomorrow as well. Its a factory P-car battery that still has a warranty so I can just change it out if needed.
