My car says its idling at 3500, and I have a very hard time believing it. The Haynes guide has no info on it. Any help would be great. Thanks!

it is an electric tach - check your grounds, check wire connections at coil
failing that, its dead, replace Or you really are idleing at 3500....troubleshoot further AFJuvat

According to the previous owner, the tach was "just rebuilt." If it were really idling at that speed, shifting would be a little exciting. Are 924s electric too?

The tach on the 924's are driven directly off of the circuit for the coil.
The gauge retains the surge (charge) of electricity and shows this by the position of the needle. Like an analog (old fashion) volt meter. There is a resistor and/or capacitor that is bad inside the gauge. Could be a bad solder joint. I don't think it's the "voice coil" for the needle or the needle would not move. There may also be a few "pots" (variable resistors) inside the gauge that can be adjusted to get the tach realigned. 944 tachs are driven directly from the DME. Possibly from the same circuit that is grounding the coil. This may be an isolated circuit. Only Wilks and Bosch knows for sure. I have the impression that the 944 and later tachs may also use an IC divider/driver circuit. I'll have to open the set of gauges I've left over from the 86 strip out.

Thanks! I hope it is a pot, that would make life easier. Would it be possible to put one in myself? Then I would not be out a tidy sum for the new gauge.
