1987 944Turbo, $800??? Missing turbo?
Hi all I have a friend who is recently came in contact with a friend of his father that owns a 1987 944. The car is rumored to be in perfect condition, other then a few things that struck me as very strange. First the car is a turbo, and apparently the guy has removed the turbo for some reason. Second it is missing a front bumper. Now I was under the impression that removing a turbo from the 944 would be way more trouble then its worth, and the car wouldn’t run correctly when it was finished. Not to mention the fact that the bumper is missing signals it’s been in some kind of an accident. Anyway the guy only wants 800 for the car, and I wouldn’t buy it my friend would so I was just wondering what your thoughts were.

Buy it, you can easily get your money back if you part it out.

sell the wheels, rear valance, and seats and you've got your money back. part the car out and everything after that is profit.
dibs on the rear valance if it gets parted out.

A 944 turbo without the turbocharger...
You would need to plug an oil supply and return line, quite a few coolant lines, and a good bit of "custom" intake and exaust piping before the car will run, period. Sounds like a lot of BS to me. Keep us updated, I'm curious. Ahmet

Thanks a bunch for the quick replies. My thoughts were along the same lines as 1.2gees, I thought that the turbo was a crucial part of the engine in these cars and it would require a lot of jimmy rigging to get it to function without it. As for parting it out, I don’t think that’s what he (my friend) had in mind, and I don’t have the time or money to take on something of that nature. However if this does turn out to be the deal he says it is I wouldn’t mind giving one of you the information if your interested in the purchase. We shall see, ill keep you informed.

There was a guy on Rennlist who did this, recently in fact. He was also now in the market for a supercharger to install instead.
I would buy it for that price. You can get a used K26/6 for around $250, I also know a guy that has the bumper you would need. Say you drop in $700 for those parts and few odd cooling lines and a turbo water pump. You now have a very inexpensive turbo.

I'm no expert, but turbo has lower compression plus all the above mentioned oil/cooling/electrical differences, sounds like a fools errand to me.
Hmmm... however I am not a fool but I play one on TV... And I live in S. Calif. Hmmm... Tell me all you know about this supposedly neutered 951. Possibly in an accident... possibly mechanically messed up... I must be insane! Tell me anyway, email me the info if you want. ScottR has me thinking.
