Turbo exhuast on 944s reduces midrange power?

Th reason I ask is I have a friend who just bought an 88 944S and the guy who sold it to him says it has a Turbo exhaust from the Cat back. (I don't know how that is possible since my Turbo S has two pipes and this one obviously doesn't)

Anyway I was driving it the other day and it felt really short on power until almost 6K on the tach.

Of course I have no comparison since I have never driven an S before, but it was a dog compared to my old S2 (I had a 91 S2) But I digress...anyway as far as I am aware if an exhaust is too big it will have a negative effect on cylinder scavenging and that will produce a drop in midrange power while giving a mild boost to the top end.

What do you guys think?

TIA (thanks in advance)
