Instrument cluster with LEDS. "Picture"

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/newleds.JPG
I can finally see my instruments at night. What an improvement. I dumped the old mirrored plastic light tunnels and have fitted 9 LEDS, 3 super bright white per section.

The intensity of the light is hard to capture on the above picture. The current LEDS aren only working at 50 % capacity.

ilikemy944 03-30-2003 11:58 AM

How many miles are on that car?
Nice LED setup :)

rammstein 03-30-2003 12:18 PM

Did you take any pics of how you installed them (pics of the underside of the cluster)?

coupe 03-30-2003 08:07 PM

The car shows 5900 kms, new speedometer. True milage is unknown.

I did not take any pictures. I did this at work and didn't have my camera...Besides it turned out to be a temp instalation. I'm still looking for materials to finally complete the job.

Hey coupe, Looks good! Please let us know exactly how you did that, it seems that dim/ dark dashes are a common problem. I know I will have to do something to mine, and that looks like a nice rout to take!:D

Looks great.

Please document\photo is possible Looks like a worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks ALJuvat.

At present I'm having electrical faults with the isntrument cluster, so I have to continue fault finding, to make sure that the problems are not related to the modification.

I bought it from the local dealer, for about US$150. The unit was a little damaged so i paid half the price...

Ok here are some pictures,

Hello all, I have been having trouble with the electricals in my dashboard since last friday. The wife and I took our 951 for a little fast run, and suddenly I noticed the 'BRAKE PAD INDICATOR'
light on. I wasnt sure of it at the time because the words came up in German.

Anyway, I wasn't going to post any pictures, but this afternoon, the alarm came up again and my water temp gauge went up to the red zone, which caused some concern, after all the cooling system has just been overhauled. New pump, thermostat, all hoses, the works.

I have noticed a blown diode, in the back of the cluster.
Here are some pictures of the LED conversion and the blown diode and track.

You must also use a resistor in line to reduce the voltage to the LEDS, reducing the voltage from 13.8 to about 3 Volts DC, failing this, the LEDS WILL BLOW.

The resistor I used is an 90 OHMS, 25 WATTS. I used one of the olD dash BULB HOLDERS to power up the LEDS. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/LEDS.JPG [img]

Hi there, I paid US$ 150 just for the odometer, speedometer gauge.

If only I had found the plastic gear sooner, I would have only bought the gear. Maybe that is all that you need, to drive the odometer, assuming that, this is your problem.

I happen to have a good old, Speedometer/odometer with a new gear, but it is in Kms and I live in the mIddle East, I would let you have it for US$ 100....:D

Coupe,

Looks really good and should be simple as well.

Could you provide a list of parts you used (part numbers would help)

My plan is still to make an LED holder using perpex plastic glass, the same dimentions as the old light tunnels. Drill 3 holeS 5mm, and fix the LEDS. I tried it, but the plastic perspex glass was 6 mm, so it get cracking, I'm still looking an 8mm thick that may work.

Parts required:

1- 9 x super bright, clear white light LEDS ( Electronic store, like RS, or Farnell. Dont know part numbers

2- 1 x 90 Ohm , 25 Watts Resistor

3- common wire

Tools required:

Electrical pliers, soldering iron, soldering lead, Multi-meter

Method:

See drawing,

I - LED HOLDER
II- RESISTOR
III- Lamp holder

connect all negative legs of LEDS together (shorter leg of led)
connect all positive legs of LEDS together. ( longer leg of led)

Do not short between negative line and positive

Connect resistor to either one of the wires as shown.

The LED is polarity concious, so it will only work one way.

Use one of the old light bulb holders to provide you the power supply. Remove old light bulb, and refit back on instrument cluster. I used the middle light bulb holder, the lower connector on the pcp is the Negative. If it doesn't light up, reverse the old light bulb connector.

i have an 84 so i kind of doubt it will work in my car. its a shame though, thats a great deal. thanks anyways

Yo mama, some one here was selling those gears for your car, at about US$ 10. I cant remember who. Just do a search.
