Sticky Lifters
After running 15 laps on the road course,I come in after a cool down lap to a loud tap tap tap from the valve train. I will allow the engine to idle for 3-5 min and the valve train is quiet. Dirty lifter, bad lifter, noisy fuel injector or valve problem ? I do run the oil level .5 qt over full for track events. This is on my 86' 951. Thanks for any ideas.

Sounds like a lifter to me...
On a happier note, you might try a bottle of "44K" by BG. You can get it at AutoZone/Checker I think. I know Texaco oil service stations have it. It just might clean things up for you. They also make an awewome oil treatment. I do not believe in "mechanic in a bottle" but BG is well respected and makes very good stuff. Hopefully this is the "fix" you need! ------------------ 87 951 - MAS kit, chips, fuel pressure regulator, 3" exhaust |

Sounds like lifters, happened to me around a very tight right hander hairpin, but I was about 2 quarts low! I needed lifters, but went onto some head work, you'll likely need the same. (Lifters are cheap, ever wanted to upgrade your head gasket? well, this is the time, for a timing belt too, hopefully it was due anyway).
One word of caution, if something is going to make your valve train quiet down (aside from cleaning, which I don't really believe in, but that's personal), it's either going to be some thickenning stuff, or the opposite, something that'll make the oil thinner, as you probably guessed, neither is really good for the engine, but both might quiet it down. I've seen many people use Marvel Mystery oil, and know that it works for quieting the engine down, but I don't think I'd put something like that in my car... It's thin as hell looking, and the bottle reads add in gas, or oil. (I'm surprised it doesn't say drink it for a good flush!) Good Luck, Ahmet |
