Transmission Axle Seals

What is the difficulty level of replacing the axle shaft seals on a early transmission while the transmission is out of the car for gas tank repair?

On a scale of 1 to 10, it's a 1 or 2.

Just get the Transaxle reseal kit. Available from lots of places.

The one that leaks the most often actually is the little one up near the shifting mechanism.

It's not that bad with the transmission in the car assuming there is no difference between the early and late models. Actually, I think the worst part was cleaning the mess of an old leak with lots of buildup.

Trans is out. Major leak is one of the axle seals, I've got them on order. This car is a '77 924 with the old type Y- 4 speed. A minor leak is from the shift rod where it enters(cross car) into the transmission. I see that there is supposedly a seal there with a pn 928---. Is it possible to remove that shift rod without cracking the case and disassembling the entire transmission to get to that seal The leak is not really bad, it was not wet with oil like the axle seal and it's not worth cracking the tranny case to get to.

PS, the whole mission here was to get to get to the gas tank as there is a real problem there.

Just pry it out with a small screwdriver, and tap in the new one - job done.

It's been a while since I touched a YR box. But looking at the parts diagram, I think it is:

1. put transmission in neutral
2. remove three M6 bolts from "lid" on opposite side of the transmission
3. clean corrosion and gunk off of the shift rod (cross shaft)
4. push the shift rod through the case and off.

You can replace the oil seal without removing the rod, takes a little more caution.

Now Kevin's telling you how to do it right way.

Either one will work.

Thanks all for the info. I wasen't sure I could pull that cross shaft out of their without cracking the case. Haynes isn't much help for that. I'll get to the tranny, but have first race(vintage ) of the year this weekend(different car).

Got the fuel tank back in it was cracked around the round plug in front of normal cracking spot. It is an impossible spot to fix so I filled it with multiple coats of Seal All a gas resistant sealant/adhesive, hopefully it will remain flexible enough. I then put a multi layer patch over it using 2oz kevlar fabric and West epoxy and also a patch of the normal cracking spot behind there. Technically, I should have used a different epoxy, their G-Flex as it has better elongation for the dissimilar materials. I finished off with a couple of layers of Kevlar seam tape across that section trying to change the flexing pattern a bit. Hopefully it will work as working with the tank is a real pain.

After getting very frustrated with the shift rod seal I finally got it out by KD's method. Using Kevins the cross shaft really doesn't want to come out. I was quite worried about that seal as I had it well ruined before it came out. Re-installation was a breeze. For the axle seals it was quite simple after finding the PelicanP video.
