Cooling Fans Question

I replaced the cooling fan switch on the radiator last fall, and noticed over the weekend that one of the fans stayed on after turning the car off. I disconnected the battery and attempted to locate a problem. I then reconnected the battery and restarted the car. When turning off the car, the fan stopped.

Since the car is new to me, (1983 - purchased last fall) should the cooling fans stay on after turning the car off if the engine temp is quite high?

Not sure if I have a problem or this is normal for the 944.

Any help would be appreciated.

The fans remain on with my '86 turbo if the temperature is high after I shut off the engine and remove key if they were running when I shut it off. Also, they sometimes come on after the motor has been shut off if it is hot.

On my 81 924 there is a ballast resistor on the firewall behind the instrument cluster. It allows the fan to operate at a lower speed without draining the battery while the engine cools down. It is normal, whats not normal is for the fans to operate at full speed or not at all if the temp switch is on.

Thanks for the replies. I will monitor the fans and see if this is an ongoing problem requiring the temp sensor switch to be replaced.
