Calling all S owners - does your car have this???? UPDATE!! UPDATE!!

Was recently out looking under the S to check if my coolant leak was gone after I tightened a screw on the heater return hose (and it is...good!!).

While under the car (from the front), I was looking to see where air gets sucked in through the air intake. It didn't appear there were any big holes or anything - just see the rad and a black rounded plastic piece above that.

First a question.......where does the air come in from?

Now, check for this on your car......do any of you have two small (about an inch long and .5 inches wide) holes in that plastic piece (above the rad)? It appears the P.O. may have used some sort-of heat gun or something to burn these two holes in the plastic (you can see the plastic is not cut clearly, it is "warped" around it's edges). Is this factory (crappy job if it is) or is this a "mod" or an attempted mod by the P.O.??? Weird thing is the holes are to the right and the intake tube is more to the left.

Would putting holes in this plastic "rounded" piece improve the performance? I've never driven another S, so I don't know if these holes are helping my car or hurting it (I have what seems to be a vacuum leak, but can't find one - could these holes be causing and high/low idle??). My S seems very fast (all it has is a Blazak chip), perhaps I should make more holes (lol).

Ok - S owners pay attention......

I took the car for a spin with the mystery holes blocked off.

The car is now night and day in the difference.

With the holes exposed (the way it has always been)......the car sounds like a Ferrari. It used to be sooooooo loud above 4000 RPM's that I found it hard to run it up into the high rev's out of fear of blowing the engine. I was wondering why people would comment at gas stations with things like "I thought a plane was landing" or "is that supercharged?".
My S was super-loud.

How do I know? Cause I blocked off those two lil' holes with tape and now the car is so quiet it's almost disappointing. Power feels about the same (pulls super-hard at 4000 and above), but it's not as "super-car" sounding and I can run up to like 6000 rpms and it's not a threatening sound.

I don't know if I like it better quiet or loud......loud is cool cause the car sounds so "911ish" - but the extra sound that is produced by these holes is almost too loud.

So, all S owners that want their car to sound more "Ferrari", do this hole thing to your car - you can always block the holes off if you don't like it. But trust me, these holes change the sound of the car 1000%!!!

Holes? Hmm. Dunno. I'm gonna bleed my steering fluid tomorrow afternoon. I'll check it out when I'm under the car.

Speaking of "S" specific things........has anyone ever removed one of those black cylinder head caps (about the size of a quarter)? One of mine has a slight oil leak, and I'm having an awfully hard time trying to get it off.

When I had the head off my car (timing belt broke), I was cleaning the valve cover and had a whale of a time getting those things off.

You almost have to push them out from the back - trying to get it off from the top didn't work for me.

I did - congrats!!!

You KNOW you will be driving that car soon, especially seeing as it's getting nice out.

....and start poking some holes here and there and you never know what will happen (lol).

I'm starting to think that new movie, "Holes" is about what I found under my front bumper!!!
