transaxle issue

After a drive i arrived at my house and came to a stop halfway up my driveway. I waited for garage to open and popped my clutch to do a lil burnout entering my garage. As i popped the clutch i heard a snap like snapping a bolt and my car accelerated but did not move. The clutch appears to work and i can run through all the gears as if nothing is wrong, no grinding or anything but no power to the tires. I can even hear and feel the torque tube turning. It feels like the torque tube is separated from the tranny. I soon noticed oil leaking out of the transaxle where the inner cv's go out to the tires. I don't know what i need, a transaxle or cv joints. any thouhgts are appreciated. Where should i start?

Easiest thing to check would be the cv joint bolts...these can be a bit sneaky backing out until the drive connection is suddenly lost - and I would suspect that your little "burnout" was all that was needed to complete this separation.

But if the cv bolts are still soundly attached...the next thing would be to remove the larger of the two rubber inspection seals on the lower transmission...near the front - and check the torque tube to transmission coupler to see if its come loose and slid off the joint.

Welcome Justacarguy,

Sounds like perhaps the differential within the transaxle took objection to your burnout? If yes, a used transaxle would likely be the cheapest fix. Others with more knowledge will chime in, and maybe the damage is less severe, but transaxles in general are not like a Ford 9” rear end and aren’t tolerant of that kind of demand.

Best of luck for a good repair,
John

My vote is a CV joint failure.

What breaks/fails within the CV, the attachment bolts themselves or the balls/cage?

Either or. I had a cage break last summer likely due to worn trans mount (which I fixed with the urethane).

To the OP: check your axles first then move on to more severe issues, such as the trans/differential/transmission coupler.

On mine the cage broke. Apparently the junkyard CV didn't like 300 HP.
