951 air filter

Has anyone used the msds air filter system that uses a K&N cone filter. I read it makes about 10-15 HP. Anyone used it? Cost about $100 or so.

I ordered one of those, but I sent it back because the adapter was poorly made (it was just a sand casting, and wasn't even machined to a smooth surface on the inside). The filter element, however, did look pretty nice. I've seen cone filter adapters that are made from a machined plate and a piece of 4" tubing welded together. This would be better in my opinion, but I don't know where to get one like that.

yes, my 87' has one which was on the car when i bought it a few months ago. im not sure about the hp, i put the old box back on for a few minutes and it is no louder or quieter either way. there are a few rigged parts like a piece of pvc to connect to the timing belt vent hose. that's the little one that is connected to the box.

Todd, was it the MSDS brand or another brand?

I had it on my car. It wasn't worth it. It just sucks up all the hot air that is in the engine bay. A better set up would be to rig up a cold air intake. If you notice on the S2s the air box is under the nose panel and sucks all the air in from outside. Much better set up.

do you all have the black tube about 3 inches in diameter running from the air cleaner box to the fender and out into the fender well? my 951 is an '86 and i have heard that was changed on later cars. I am getting cold air now but don't know about the volumn thru that tube. My '86 na944 has a tube going out there also.

Yes, it was the MSDS one. And I have an '88 and my car does have the tube running to the left fender. They may have modified the fender lining so that it's less likely to get water in the intake, but they didn't do anything to the intake pipe.

I have a K&N Powerhaus intake on my 911. It's nice, but don't expect the wild power gains promised. A friend of mine had his car rolling road tested before and after a K&N conversion. Result: Plus 6 horsepower at the wheels. You need to place the filter so that cold air is lead to it. Also you can get some kind of heat resistent "foil" or whatever you call that in english. Install that around the filter and it gets better.
