Piston stuff

HELLO.... I am curious.... What is say.... the difference between... .000" standard size piston and .020" oversize piston What does it mean... because if i buy the mustang ( i will i just talked to my father about it... ) i need to change the pistons or there rings or get a new block... i figured mabey i would buy new pistons... but.. what does this all mean.. and what is the reason for a 4.00mm oil ring and 4.75mm oil ring? Should i just go to a junkyard and buy a long block.... how much do you think that would cost? its a 82 ford mustang 2.3 liter 4 cylinder... please help me and i will be getting a porsche next i hope.... just dont have the money yet....

If you're planning to buy a Porsche but can't afford it why is your next logical a 2.3L Mustang? The two cars are completely different although both sprung from modest origins (924 and Falcon?). For that kind of money I suggest that you purchase an early VW Rabbit. The Rabbits are tough, cheap, and handle pretty well. Try looking for an early (83-86 GTI if you can afford one). A mustang that needs a motor likely has other components which need replacement. You could buy a high mileage 5.0 that runs better for less than you would spend getting the 2.3 back on the road again.

Just my $.02

Good Luck,

Erick

The .000" standard piston is the same size as the original pistons the engine came with, .020 oversize pistons are used when the cylinders are bored out this is done if the cylinders are worn or to up the displacment of the engine during a performance rebuild.

If the engine has to be bored it might be cheaper to find another engine in a junkyard or buy a long block from an autoparts store.
If you can't do the work yourself I'd look for another car.

thanks... Yeah i am sure i could do the work... I think perhaps that napa is selling a short block.... what would that include on the engine? i would have to move the um... head and oil pump and stuff right? it says that it is $91.99 could i just be looking at a piston set or something.... this is what is says(NAPA Short Block Kit( - 10)) also here in las cruces i cant find anything under 1k that is even worth looking at... i drove the mustang and its pretty solid.. and has some nice room.... I was looking at um... a Volkswagon GTI and it was nice... it had 80,000 on the clock BUT 3k is a lil to expensive for me at the time being.. and I really dont need to fix the mustang i can just let it use oil... we dont have emissions here.... BUT i would like to get that fixed... the um... white smoke is a little much for me.... thanks...

Oh and the mustang is only $400 i bet he will go down to $350 or so..... later..

Fanatic...ever here of financing? For 400 dollars you could down payment a 3000 dollar 944 (plenty of them out there), for as much as you're going to spend putting this Mustang back on the road, you could finance a 951 easily. That's my 2 cents worth.

Yeah BUT there is one little problem... I am currently unemployed... and my father cannot cosign for me he doesnt think becuase his credit is shot... and i really dont want to get the 951 RIGHT AWAY because I would like to wait till my friends learn to respect a car a lil more... the poor nissan was always fallin apart cuz of that.... and we figured we could use this as our "toy" paint it all weird... and do weird things to the interior... one of my friends is like WAY rich and has everything we would need to do anything on a car..... although if a good 951 comes up then i will talk to my father about it... later....

P.S. No wander so many people are homelss here - I have been trying to get a job here for like um... 4 months... and liek i just recenlty had a killer idea... beause my moms boyfriend put a ad in the paper for web designer... and someone called asking if he fixes computers.. and he told them i did.. and i talked to her and made a appointment and drove to her house.... and made $60 in 4 hours... WOW... i told her i was $15 an hour... and i was always worried about insurance... well i can have them sign a waiver.... like that says i am not responsible for computer problems after i leave etc etc.... i am goign to work on advertising myself today and such.... thanks later....
