Well I have done it again, I looked at the for sale ads, I apologize profusely however it's a boring Saturday and Blackfoot hinted about selling his 968 (sent him email... still waiting to hear back from him) so that got me started.
Anyway Blackfoot's 968 is a non LSD and so are many cars I see out there, can I buy one and plug it in or is it more trouble than that? Has anyone done this? I figure I could pick up a NEW LSD for around $1300. Also found a White/blk S2, hate white cars though... feel like I'm driving a refrigerator... or a service truck... of course I don't see the color when I'm sitting in it! How about a Burgundy/Burgundy 1987 951... kind of a funky cool color... anyone know if the 1987 951 came with LSD standard? Thanks all.

installing an LSD in a nonLSD car MIGHT require a seperate oil cooler (about $200). However, the process MIGHT be a big pain, you might get a R&P sound if it isn't put in perfect.
burgandy/burgandy is an alright combo (that's what mine is). Biggest problem with it is that ignorant people will argue with you for hours on the color (they think it's either purple or maroon). The 87 951 very possibly might be an LSD car, but I'm not sure exactly how to tell (I think it's given in the option code). BTW-my 944 DOES NOT have an LSD and I spin both wheels, even when drifting. The car is up on a lift now and I when I grabed my left one the right one spun the same way. So then I grabed the right one and tried it, same thing. So then I tried to spin them opposite directions; it would do it, but it was really hard for me to get it to happen. Anybody capable of explaining this to me?

The NA most certainly did come with an LSD - it was an option. and only available after mid year 1985. The option code and the transmission number for the NA LSD escapes me at the moment.
An LSD transmission does not require a cooler - the 951 came with an optional transmission cooler - no NA ever did. An LSD will bolt right in, you just need to make sure you get the backlash correct or you will be making all sorts of noise - it only takes about 30 minutes to install once you get the tranny out. Aaron EDIT: I believe that the option code for the LSD was 220.

What about a Quaife or GT, do they just bolt in?
Do you need a factory LSD trans?

Tranny doesn't take long to pull, I can get mine out in under 1.5 hours by myself (but I've also pulled it quite a few times). I thought that backlash was hard to get right, is that correct?
