Running without power steering pump?

Hi

On my 944NA - is it possible to remove the pump or belt on my power steering and still have it work without having to change to a non-servo rack?

I drive my car without using the power-steering pump...:)

I don't have the turnbuckle for my ps pump, so I've been running sans pump.

Its possible but the sterring will be much harder than a non P/S setup. Plus added wear on the steering column may cause damage in the long run its not a good idea.

Go for it, you have nothing to worry about.

Me too- for 4 years or so- no slop in the u-joints
seized pump- bad hose leak.. on day it will get fixed, but I like the "manual" feel.

"Manual feel"!?! Without PS assist it is VERY difficult to park the car. The ratios for the manual rack are very different to make up for the increased efforts.

i'm running manual steering ATM, i'll fix it when i have time. no biggie.

Hi

Had a leaking pump, but fixed it with a Porsche repair kit. Still - I am racing with the car and got an input that a non-servo car would give better handling inputs.
Is it enough to remove the belt or can I remove the whole assembely with pump etc? Is there anything I have to block off?

PS You`ll have to exuse any bad spelling etc. Obviously - English is not my native language..!

The ratio of the manual racks is much easier to handle than a power rack without assist. Power racks running with out fulid have been done by disconnecting the high pressure lines and removing the pump. Most people will fill the rack with a high density lube such as the type used for packing bearings. This keeps the rack in good shape incase you ever want to go back to power assist. If you are tracking and want to use a manual rack I would just go ahead and find a manual rack out of a 924. They bolt right up to our cars and are available from junkyards (ebay). They are still going ot run you around $100. Make sure you get the arms and steering knuckle (u joint) because those parts are not the same on the power racks.

IMO, if you're having trouble steering your 944 without PA, you need some upper body strenght ;)
