Can I use unleaded on 931
I have heard that the engine should be made to use unleaded gas otherwise some parts (valves etc.) might get burned. So is 931 engine suited for unleaded gas?

On my 1980 931, there is a sticker that says UNLEADED FUEL ONLY by the gas cap. Nuff said. Too bad mine won't run (yet). Nick |

If you live in the USA and your car has a cat the answer i easy: Use unleaded fuel, the engine has hard valve seats. But if you like me live in a country were cat didn't become standard until -89 the answer is not that easy.. Shell's swedish page (http://www.shell.com/content/54450/index.htm) says that the 924 Turbo can run on unleaded fuel (Blyfri 98) but BUT you must add lead replacesment (Blyersättningsmedel) to the gas. Check with your gas station, they might know...

If not, you can but a product called "Instead O' Lead" that will lubricate the valve guides, and seats. If it's a U.S. spec car you shouldn't have a problem with unleaded.

It is European version(model 1980, 170HP). What can happen if I drive it with A95H (unleaded)? The problem is that the A98 is too expencive here.

Azagal,
My wife's '82 has a connection on the driver's fenderwell that can be unplugged for lower octne gas. I heard that it retards the timing. drew1 |

If the engine was made to run on leaded gas running unleaded will cause the valve seats to wear faster than normal. The only other problem would be the octane rating if it's not high enough. Next time you have a valve job done have hardend seats installed at least on the exaust valves.

Check out www.mittelmotor.de
Lots of info on Porsches and fuel types. Also an extensive list showing all Porsches and the fuel they need. However it's in German. |
