83 944 Head count?
I remember looking at production and import numbers on the 944 a while back. If I recall correctly, other than a case of an owner imported 82, the 83's are the rarest of the breed in the states, correct?
Why does it seem like there are more '83 owners on this site, than anything else? Just curious, for no particular reason.

5/83 checking in.
I was almost 3 years old when my dad brought this car home. He waited nearly 9 months for it and bought it before seeing a 944 in person, much less test driving one.

Had my 83 for 6 days now, and going through the learning curve.
When I went shopping, there were three within 100 miles of me. The one I bought, one in PA., and the third was "rode hard, and put up wet.". , but was still on the road.S1E

I have an 83 lying around here somewhere....damnit i lost my car again...It's gotta be here somewhere....ARIGHT...who took my car! its not funny guys...give it back! I believe mine is made in late 82...but is an 83...rare? mabye i can sell it for more like 600 then! As far as a race car goes...I would build one out of an 83 anyday...soo much simpler and cheaper parts! Less electronics too!

I bought mine from the original owner who bought it in October of '82. Have original stickers and sales agreement. Maintenance records up to about 55K. They let the belts break about 6K miles ago and it has a bent valve or two. I'll be yanking the head off in the next couple of weeks. Good machine shop here who is real familiar with them.

83 here. Not sure of when it was made. Very poor condition, but want to restore it to original condition so it can be a reliable daily driver.
Not running when purchased: 114,000 miles. Gold outside Brown/Black inside. 8 cookie cutter wheels, and a Turbo like nose replacement still in box. Cost $1,000. Things I have done: Alternator replaced Alternator to battery cable Battery to starter cable Starter Slave Clutch Cylinder Cone filter replacement Oil Seals (Twice) Radiator Fan temp switch Rear Shocks Fixed window switches Replaced Balance Shaft belt Replaced Cam Shaft Belt Replaced A/C – Alternator Belt (Twice) Replaced Power Steering Belt Replaced A/C and P/S turn buckle adjusters $400 spent to fix emission and get NY State Inspection and NY State Registration Replace 4 tires with BFG R1 Auto-cross tires Refinished two cookie cutter wheels 6 to go. Oil Change (Twice) Total miles added to car since purchase 400 miles |

I have a low-mileage 83, manufactured in May of that year.
In my area, there are 944s all over the place. I see at least 2 or 3 other ones on the road every day. I don't think the 83s are all that rare, from the look of things...

I think there was only about 5000 sold in the US in 83, that must make them relatively rare

88 looks to be the rarest next to the 82's. But according to this page, http://www.cantonia.com/prod_numbers.html. 83's are fairly rare.
