I am interested in installing headers on my 1989 944na. Can this be done by a 'shade tree mechanic' such as myself or should I have the muffler shop do it? I am also in need of a new muffler so I was thinking that rather trying to install the header myself, I would let the muffler installer do it while installing the muffler. Do they (Midas, etc.) do this type of work (headers)? I have also heard that Midas has a great free flow muffler for under $50. Any opinions and/or suggestions?
Thanks lots, Steve (1989 944na) |

I bought my header on e-bay for a hundred bucks and installed it myself in about 3 hours. That was from start to finsh. It was really very simple. I then took it to an independent muffler shop here in Phoenix and had them install a 2 1/2 inch exhaust pipe. I had them flang the catalitic converter and add in a short section of flanged staight pipe so when it comes time to go to emmisions testing I can pull the small section of flanged pipe and install the cat. I then had them put on a 14 inch Magna flow muffler. The pipe work and muffler cost me about 350.00. I use this car (84 944 n/a) autocrossing and it is LOUD. best of luck..
