Matt...in case you don't read rennlist too often, you have an invitation from turbo tim to go down and be the guinnea pig for his exhaust system experiment. Here is the link to that thread: that thread. I want to see some dyno numbers, so go down and do it!

I dunno - the green beast runs pretty damn strong with the stock Cat and Dynomax muffler. I'm guessing 10hp peak with a cat-pipe and Tim's exhaust.
At 15psi, it felt (very subjective) like it used to at 15 psi (with all my goodies). We'll have to wait for the dyno numbers I guess. Only problem with the car is that the boost hits so hard that it blows all the hoses off the intake manifold and intercooler! Once thats sorted it'll be a real runner. Hmmm...thinking about getting another 951 with all the recent talk....this time its gonna be black... Erick [This message has been edited by wolfrpi (edited 10-18-2001).] |

Forgeline RS 8" in front 9.5" in back. If I get another 951 I think I'm gonna go for Fikse FM-10s in 8" and 9" with 235s and 255s.

Wolf --
I just got my 89 951 back from getting a Tial wastegate, Cup Car turbo, and Turbonetics blow-off valve. It already had Stage II chips. But the power was coming on too late in the rpm band and it had too much boost. They thought the wastegate was faulty, but found that the cycling valve that is connected to the wastegate had a bad ground. They cleaned and tightened the ground and no more violent boost -- much more linear power delivery. You can find the ground on top of the bellhousing. There should be two wires found there -- a thicker one that grounds the starter and a thinner one that grounds misc electronic engine controls. The thinner one was the culprit on my car. Anyway, this is what they told me -- the shop seems very knowledgable. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the info...
I've been screwing around with these cars for while now..lol We removed the cycling valve to improve boost response and cut out any unnecessary piping. Prior to driving the car, i hooked up and tightened the hoses in much the same way as I did with my older (large) turbo. I didn't anticipate the stock K26 spooling fast enough to blow these hoses off. Its probably like trying to inflate a balloon with a fire hose. We'll just put some super weather stripping adhesive on and tighten up the clamps and the car will be fine. I actually had similar issue with my 16 valve Saab turbos with the stock turbos. We're looking for near instant boost response and the popping of the hoses is a good indication that we're getting what we want. Next step is for Grommit to get it to the 1/4 mile and to the dyno. P.S. - I'm suprised you're stock cycling valve will work correctly with the Tial wastegate given that the wastegate is a dual port style by design. If it does, your mechanic is pretty good! Thanks for the info, Erick |

Ahmet, I'm planning on building a more streetable car this time. I am still considering a Lotus, although I'm not sure how practical it will be commuting 100 miles a day in LA traffic. A 928 S4 will be pratical, but they are still expensive for me to justify (at least in the type of shape I want it).
The best bang for the buck remains the 944 turbos, particulary the early ones. I have a soft spot for the 86s mainly because of their light weight and wheel offset. They're also easier to find. Personally I like the deep dish look of the wheels on the 86. The plan is to hold out and get a black one that has a very nice body (if the Lotus or a 928 S4 does not happen). Here are the planned mods: Fikse FM10 8 and 9s with good rubber (235/255) Weltmeister front lowering springs Stock shocks and sways (maybe Koni reds) Authority MAF (helps turbo spool and 10-15 hp on the top) Stock wastegate (preset at 15psi) stock (maybe rebuilt) turbo Bursch test pipe (spool) Stock muffler (to keep the noise down) MSD 6A ignition (spool) 3 or 3.5 bar regulator GT LSD with 924S tranny (if it will fit) Magnecore wires With the above mods, I'm thinking the car will be totally streetable and reliable. The stock turbo suprisingly performs very well with the LR wastegate, as evidenced by Grommit's set-up. I'm thinking about sizing a 15lb spring for similar results if it is possible. Although I could only run that pressure, that is all a responsbile 951 owner should use on the street anyway..lol. The MAF also is non-tunable, along with the 3 or 3.5 bar regulator (the less fussing around the happier both me and the car are). HP? not sure - hopefully at least 260 at the wheels, although I'm not sure what exactly to expect. I do know though that the car will be very responsive and light on its feet, which is very important to me in a street car. Although the green beast would dog just about every ricer in town, I frequently had to get the car up in the rpms to do it (turbo lag, etc.) Erick |
