For those of you who have taken on the task of replacing every hose, gasket and anything else that falls into that category: How much did the job cost? How much time did you spend? Any pitfalls to avoid?

First off, what kind of car and where are the problem areas?
When you say EVERY gasket, hose, etc, you are talking a LOT of time and a good deal of money. (Prices given are for my area, your costs may vary) Start with the basics: Timing and balance shaft belts - that job should run you about $300, not including any additional parts Water hoses - parts should run about $75, an easy do it yourself - same with the vac hoses. Engine seals - the fronts aren't too bad, you can have them do that when they do the timing belts, a complete front seal job should run about $300 Also, if you are in the engine to this level, you may as well replace the water pump. - add another $150 or so The price goes up significantly when you have to do rear balance shaft seals, oil cooler and rear engine seals Gaskets - depending on what one, you are looking at (the head, intake and exhaust gaskets aren't too bad, the oil pan gasket is a real pain) AFJuvat |

Duh! Sorry.
I have a 1983 944 NA. I am also considering replacing all of the wiring possible. Speaker wires being first. Lynn |

... uhmmmm like the previous post says.
1. Timing belt and front seals ...first priority. 2. Speaker wiring is always good to replace if you are upgrading your system. 3. the rest.... if it ain't broke don't fix it.... just do the obvious maintenance, check and change all fluids/filters etc, and inspect your hoses for wear. Save your money..... sooner or later.... you may need to put in a whack of money... Alex |

Yeah, I'm curious as to why you would want to replace everything.
Did you just but the car? Did it have maintenance records? If you wanted to prioritize maintenance, I would suggest the following: Timing and balance shaft belts replaced Cooling system pressure tested (shows leaks) Front engine seals (if necessary - leaking oil can/will destroy a timing belt) All other maintenance AFJuvat |

I wanted to start on that cause I've done the timing and balance belts, the radiator isn't leaking and the only leak (oil pan gasket) is being fixed next week. My thought was to find another project to tackle.

..well if you are bored... and have too much time on your hands......
You can help me pull my clutch, swap my brakes... change some heater hoses............ and if you are really bored you can wax the thing as well .... LOLOL But seriously....if you have allready done the front seals and belts, and nothing else is wrong... I guess you could look at the little things, such as suspension bushings, put some new sound deading material in the doors, re-do your sound system, try and take all the little squeaks out, tighten up the stearing etc.......all kinds of other fun things you could do...... but me....I would be happy its running well...and drive it hard for a while........
