K&N oil filter

Hey everybody I've come back. My 944's been out of commission for a while due to a bad starter. Other committments (such as my new son), left me with no time and little funds to maintain her right.

But now I've got a new starter in her and I'm going to flush the engine and put fresh Syntec in her before I start driving her again. I bought a couple of these new K&N oil filters and I wanted to get the opinions of anybody here that have used these before.

I've only used OEM filters before so I'm skeptical, but I'm willing to give it a try. Everything it touts on the box sounds promising, but how does it work in the end?

I got some Weltmeister hood shocks too. Hopefully, I won't have to deal with those darn things going out anymore.

I have never used them, but i have always been happy with either OEM or Mobil 1, why go with the K&N? it seems like a giant marketing scheme to me...

The most important thing is, does it have the check valve?
Very very very important. If it does, give them a shot, if it doesn't don't even install it!

I've been using K & N for 15yrs + it seems. Im sold on them, I have the cone on now but wish I had save the money and just keeped the box K&N, will wait till summer to determine if the heat is a factor. I belive that as long as K&N has been out w/ the testing that has been performed that the naysayers would have exposed the truth. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. Good luck. Scott

What does the check valve do? The K&N has some sort of valve that doesn't allow oil to drip back into the crank case after the engine is turned off.

Now I'm thinking that would make changing the oil difficult the next time I do it.

Rich, the check valve keeps oil in the filter so you dont have a dry start up situation, and yes the k&n has the check valves, I sell them everyday, I've ran them on the 944 a few times with no problems,oh and by the way, cangrats on your new son!

Thanks, that's all I needed to know...and thanks regarding my boy, he surely is a great kid--I look forward to watching him grow up.

Hmm *makes a mental note* K&N does have check valve...
Most other filter manufacturer's don't realize that our filters have a check valve, so they just list another filter that will fit our cars. Bad idea.

I run a K&N panel filter in my 944. Something about $20 every 5 years for upkeep just sounded good. It was put in by the PO, and I have already had to clean it 2 times. So, I paid $20 for the cleaning kit, instead of $35 for each new filter. Nice.

I heard good things about the K&N oil filters. Supposedly they have a very low resistance to flow, and a very high ability to catch particles. Plus, IIRC, they catch smaller particles than most standard oil filters.

If they are a decent price, maybe I'll switch. That is, when I run out of Mahle filters (still got 4 left).
