how tight should wheel bearing lock nuts be tightened?

My S2 has all new front suspension parts. Everything has been replaced and torqued to specs. However, when going over speedbumps, there is definitely something loose. I triple checked everything and discovered the wheel bearings were the source. When I tightened the locknut more, the "clunk" was reduced. I read where the nuts should lock down, then backed off a quarter turn. When I do that, the looseness returns. When I lock the nuts down until they stop, the rotor still turns easily. What is the proper setting? If backing off causes it to be loose, then what is going on? btw, not only does it make noise over speedbumps, but the steering wavers when loose. The outer bearings look to be in good condition.

Tighten them down until they are tight, and then back it off ONLY enought to where you can move the washer with the tip of a screwdriver. I belive that is the proceedure I have heard of. HTH

It is likely that you have bad wheel bearings.

Tighten teh locknut until the lockwasher behind it can just BARELY be moved when you put lateral pressure on it.

Then tighten the allen bolt securing the locknut to 11 Ftlbs

Thanks guys, but not sure that's it. I had the bearings checked by a porsche shop during a state inspection and they are fine. Everything is back together but the clunking sound is still there. It is definitely coming from the wheel vicinity and particularly over speed bumps. Again, it has new A arms, ball joints, shocks, tie rod ends. I wonder if there is something loose in the brake itself or rotor assembly such as a loose plate or something(?). Regardless, I know I'll track it down.

Sway bar bushings.

Tighten the nut at the top of the struts.
