Just failed my emissions with flying colors.
Below are results. I am completely clueless about emissions so any help would be greatly appreciated...

AT 15 MPH

NO ppm 1010 1313

AT 25 MPH

CO % .77 1.37
NO ppm 0919 1399

Everything else passed....

hope not...I'm gonna try to run that fuel cleaner stuff through and replace the O2 sensor...give it another go,.. hopefully it will do it...I get a waver if the repairs exceed $620, taking it to a shop will be my last resort.

I'd say cat, also. You could go -gasp, no!- non original and get a high flow universal cat for about $120 installed.

Just about any muffler shop, look for one that has a bunch of ricy cars outside, they will have them.

jsut be sure that when they cut your old one out, they leave the nice flanges that Porsce put in so you can put in a test pipe (cat eliminater) for "track days"

What are the advantages of a high flow cat?

They have less flow restriction than other after market units, and most factory ones, too.

do they control the emissions to the same extent as factory (i.e. will I pass the damn test )?

It worked great for my Suzuki. Basicly they have a lager, more efficient ceramic matrix, so it's possible that the emmissions will be LOWER than with a stock cat, that is why they are CARB approved in California.

Universal high flow cat

do you know the inlet and outlet pipe size on an 84 944? I'll need to know that before ordering the cat.

Siberian, if you have a dial caliper you can check the inside diameter while you have it off, right where the flanges bolt together.

After going through all my resources it appears that the size is 2.030" and the factory cat is 14" long...in case someone needs this info in the future.
Local "porsche only" snobs want 3 hours of labor to put it on, which at their rate is roughly $300, in any case it's a better alternative to replacing it with stock for $700+++

Sorry, I was away for a little while. Any muffler shop can put it in, in a matter of about a half an hour.

Try some SEA FOAM haha SoCal. Seriously though, this in combination with the gauranteed to pass emissions always works the best as far as internally cleaning the engine. Those werent all too bad. We are allowed 220ppm in delaware. I failed my VR4 with 1500ppm so dont feel so bad, all is not lost.

High NOX is a byproduct of low combustion temps and or non functional catalyst. You still have problems with Hydrocarbons AND Carbon Monoxide. Check you plugs/wires, dist cap and rotor as well as coil. You'd be suprised what a difference those being in good order will make in emissions. Remember that the O2 sensor is the primary control for the DME with regard to air/fuel mix and ignition timing. If it is bad or functioning poorly, you will have high emissions.

Thanks Kevin, I just ordered a universal cat converter should be in by the end of the week. I also put in a new Bosche O2 sensor, so hopefully after next week I'll be good to go. If not you'll see this post at the top of the list again..

could be a bad mas air flow sensor, or whatever porsche calls it. I have heard of the 944 ones going bad and causing your car to run rich.

New wires, new plugs, and a new coil and distributor cap would be the first things i would try before a new cat. Cats are probably cheaper, but in no way would those things not be worth changing.
