I just installed the FR Wilk chip this evening and it is worth every dollar I paid for it. St. Pete's finest were making me a little nervous on 9th Street so I packed it in for the evening and will run a more comprehensive test this weekend. Without a doubt this chip may get you in trouble.

i totally agree with todwic. it really does transform the car. AF-juvat done a nice write up on this chip, and he is very unbiased.
you wont be disapointed with it !

You feel the difference all across the power band - the car pulls all the way from 0 - top end.

Definately worth the price - much better than the other aftermarket chips out there

My write up is here...

Get FR-wilks Power Prom 2, Im running it right now in my 87 924S and I love it, Its the best thing I have done to the car, big bang for the buck. I dont want to ever take it out. The CHIP/Prom changes the fuel and timming maps along with a different redline. No more waiting until 3,000rpm for power, good power all the way up to 6,500 or in my case 7,000. I also noticed that the car rev's alot quicker. GO FOR IT

I have an '83 944, early one, how is the chip installed here?

Does it replace the original or simply add to it?

I have an issue where when I rev the engine, and release the accelerator, the car'd revs drop below 900 and then back up to the proper idle... hoping a chip change will eliminate the problem/././/

oh, where can I order the chip?

Thanks

btsave, this is from FR_WILKS website. He does sell a chip that can fix the SHUDDER you are talking about, Also I thin you need to send him your DME to get a chip installed on the early 944

The early Porsche 944 has an engine shudder problem. As the engine returns to idle, the engine will drop several hundred rpm below idle and then return to a normal idle. This produces an engine shudder that is very pronounced and very unpleasant to the owner. It is a problem found only in the US DME version as imported into the USA and Canada from 1983 to mid year 1985. In Japan starting in 1982. This is not to be confused with the 944 motor mount problem that can also produces a shudder.

On deceleration (closed throttle), the fuel is shut-off temporarily. This done to save on fuel and cut pollution. The fuel flow is gradually reintroduced as the engine drops below 1,600rpm. The engine then returns to a normal idle condition. That is how the early Euro 944 functions._ The Euro 944 DME does not have the shudder problem.

In order to save on fuel, the US DME was redesigned for a fuel shut-off at 1,350rpm. Apparently this was a smog related change in the DME. The negative results to this change is, as the engines aged, they picked up this nasty shudder. My engine dropped to 600rpm before returning to normal idle of 950rpm. The shudder was very pronounced. The worst part of it is the shudder could not be fixed. It was internal to the fuel injection computer and swapping DMEs gets you another computer with the same problem.

There is now a bug fixed version of the software. I have modified the code to increase the fuel shut-off frequency from 1,350rpm to 2,000rpm. The code has been thoroughly tested and the shudder is gone!

NOTE: Not all early US Porsche 944 show symptoms of the shudder or it is so mild as not to be noticed.

cuse it says on his page, for $200 you can raise rev limiter to 6500 or 7000

how far can you rev the car out to without possibly floating valves?

Probably depends on the condition of your head. Im sure it could rev to 7k for a second or two.

nah i aint gonna try that 'second or two' idea. all it takes is the blink of an eye....one valve just hangs open a tad too long and WHAM the piston smacks it and there goes the motor. how fast do you think those valves are opening and closing at 7000 rpm? VERY fast.

Plus sustained high rpm can actually hurt valvesprings, because of excess heat...it anneals them and makes the spring rate even lower, further increasing the risk of float. My friend found out the hard way with he was road racing his civic....11K rpm car, up and down the range all day long and towards the end he busted up the motor..
I want to put a Web Cam in down the road and play around with that....so upgraded valvesprings would be nice..

UMmm, like cooler said it depends on what you have done to your head. But the chip I have has no rev limit, I have been around 7,000-7500 once or twice but there really isnt much power up there, kinda drops off around 6600rpm. Its not the top end you really need to worry about its the bottom end that is gonna fly apart first. Raising the red line is kinda nice, you can hit like 62mph in second gear at like 6800rpm so change the redline to 7,000rpm its nice and its ot gonna hurt anything, just dont hold it there for a long time
