944 vs 928

Whats the difference?

I fell in love with the 944 body style. I am now about two months away from being able to pay for one outright. About $5000 area. So, I am actively looking at whats out there...

Anyways... my wife had a customer in her store that mentioned if I would be a loving owner he would part with an 83 928 he no longer has the time for. Said he would make me a good deal on it if I truley loved Porsches.

I have NO intention of taking this offer. I just don't like the body as much as the 944. Is there something else I am missing though? Does the 928 have advantages over the 944? I think I have noticed 928's sell for more, not sure though. Looking for education here...

The 928 is a heavier 'grand touring' car. If you want a higher-powered highway cruiser, the 928 is for you. The 944, while down on power, handles a little better due to the lighter weight.

The 928 is also very expensive to maintain. The earlier models aren't as bad, but the later models with the 32 valve head can get real pricey when it comes to regular maintenance.

Speaking of weight, the front suspension tends to wear out quicker than the typical car, due to the heavy burden it bears.

IIRC, the early 928's had a dual-mass flywheel, which is heavy, and when it goes, it costs a bundle.

Don't get me wrong- the 944 isn't a cheap car either! But the 928 had been known to be a more expensive Porsche to maintain.

I appreciate the information. That gives me a little more insight as to what was being offered. More power... arrr..arrr..arrr.

Nope. The 944 just has that stocky/elegant look I like. I'm so hooked its sad. And I know I'm going to have to sink money into this car I will never recover. It's kinda like I'm about to stab myself it the foot and can't stop.

Mike --

Wait till you see the opportunities to really play with your car - Autocross, Track Driver's Ed...etc. That's when the $$ really starts leaving your wallet at a high rate of speed!

The way I look at it is like this: there ARE hobbies/addictions that require more money, like: yachting, flying, illegal drugs...etc. But the Porsche hobby/addiciton ranks pretty high up there!
