Scary gas problem...

So, I filled my tank today($36.32) and it started to smell like gas...really bad... inside the car, outside the car. Drove around all day like this, decided to see what the problem was -

Took the rear carpet out, took off the little white odor absorber thing... and the thing was full of gas.. it didn't go all the way up to the wires, but jesus, I was scared to drive anymore.. What could the problem be?

I would replace the rubber gasket sealing the fuel level sending unit to the tank first. They dry out, and crack over time. It's a really simple fix.

On an early car, yes. Not sure on a later car though........... I would wait until someone with a later car posts just to be sure.

I just noticed that you have a late car, and I have zero experience with them. I'm sure someone will be happy to help though.

check the hoses and where the sending unit screws in for leaks.

Filler neck leaks. Next fill don't top it off and see if you get fumes.

Well the car always smells a little bit like gas, but now it's ridiculous. Is it safe to be driving around with essentially a puddle of gas inside my car?

Only way I can see gas soaking the rear carpet is the filler neck seal is shot. The tank level sender is below the carpet on top of tank.

Just don't smoke or flick your Bic!

Come on, you know the answer is no unless someome is chasing you with a gun trying to kill you and your car is your only escape.

Heavy fumes will be the real danger. Get a spark and up you go. Given our cars' bad wiring this would not be out of the question in just normal operation.

What little white odor absorber thing?

Sounds like something a PO put in the car.

Might have holes in the top of the tank from a stereo installation.

Cool

nomex is fire retardant, not fire proof.

Errr, name a material that is totally fireproof if you get it hot enough? It is all relative scale.

Besides getting rid of the gas, which I'm about to do right now, what else can I do to make my car safely drivable again? I need to drive today.

Also, what is the part number for the gasket I need?
