Complete paint or just top coat?

Got my 924 last year. Will be on the road next month after a lot of mechanical work. Previous owner said it had a new profesional paint job and didn't notice till on the way home in the sun light. Only interested in the mechanics when I picked it up. So now I look and all I see is the sand paper marks from a bad prep job and runs in the clear coat. Whats recomended? Just sant down the clear coat and redo? Will the cratches in the undercoat show through? Sand the paint completely?

Re: Complete paint or just top coat?

Nobody can really give you advise on this with out seeing it.

Here are some shops around the GTA that know Porsche paint:

- Dupont Collision ask for George
- Peter at Excellence in Etobicoke - expensive but worth it if you demand the best
- Joe at Auto-Pro in Oakville - in-expensive price
- Steve Rotenberg at Collision Network - PCA member, a PCA-UCR advertiser and has been known to take on many levels of projects and paint solutions.

I hope that helps.

Depends how much you want to spend.........

If the body is straight and true a full sand down would be nice..........

IF cost is an issue you can getway with sanding down the clear and re-spraying from there.

If you know how, you can take the runs out yourself with either a nib file or a prepped straight edge razor. Be VERY careful not to go too far and touch the color coat.

Sand with 600 grit to give new clear something to "bite" into. Gray Scotch pad around edges. Leave no surface to be painted shiny. The new clear will fill any minor scratching.

My opinion is that if you are going to do any spraying of clear coat or paint, then you should just plan on doing a complete paint job.

With all the taping and removing the trim, it's just a matter of how much sanding you wanna do.

The paint doesn't cost much if you get the cheap stuff.

blackfoot, How about knocking down the runs like you suggested but then wet sanding with some 2000 grit until it's baby bottom smooth and then using polishing compound to bring back the shine. (do not go through the clear coat) I wouldn't think there would be a need to strip the entire clear coat.

mlue, do you have any contact information (websites / phone numbers) for any of these places? I was thinking of just going to maaco but if you suggest these places then it's something to look into...

I'm not saying strip the entire clearcoat. If the problem lies in the application of the paint like he suggests, then it's possible to apply clear over properly prepped substrate. He's looking to do it in a more cost-effective way; if it were me, I'd either just live with it as is, or do it right and strip to metal & paint.

The problem with wet sanding & polishing is that you have no idea how much existing clear remains, or even if the clear thickness is uniform. It might work, it might not. You may get done with 75% of the car and then where the clear is thin or you are too aggressive, you sand through the color coat. It's very easy to do, unfortunately. I would only try that route if I had resigned myself to a strip & paint if the sanding & polishing experiment didn't work.

All the contacts I took note of were refered by fellow PCA-UCR friends in and around the GTA that have had good experiences one time or the other. Here are the phone numbers I have in my book the others you can look up.

Collision Networks Inc - Steve Rotenberg
140 Doughton Rd., Concord, Ontario
905-669-1665
I used them for wheel restoration several year ago.

Prochilo Bros. Auto Collision
40 Midwest Rd., Scarborough, Ontario
416-755-7651

There is certainly nothing wrong with using Macco or any other shops, the ones I have mentioned all come recommended and have experience with P-Cars. Talk to them do your research and make your decision on whats best for you.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Complete paint or just top coat?

I really am sorry for the temporary thread-hijack... I hope I'm not offending anyone... if my question takes more than one message to clear up, I'll make my own thread.. just thought this is about paint, so I might as well keep it here..

well, I've never painted a car before so I'm clueless... for example, I called up maaco to get an idea of their prices, and they range from 600-1300.... I know it's easy to say "just look at what you get with the packages", but the problem is I dont know what I'm looking for within the packages itself..

take maaco, just for example.. They have 4 packages which range from a "High grade automotive enamel" to "base coat, clear coat, urethane" and 2 in between.. (reference)

I guess my question is - I have a couple stone chips and scratches in my car.. I'd like to get it painted... it's silver now, I'd like black... so if I wanted to go that route, what should be included in the package for me? I'd ask the guys at whatever shop I go to, but as sales people, they're job is to tell me what I need plus what I dont.. lol
