Tranny code question

Greetings Subject matter experts (SME's). I got a deal on a good used tranny. ($150, sweet!) I have not looked up inside to see what I have in my 84 N/A but the one I got is "QK040906". Now according to Clark's the QK tranny is ROW, type 016J with all the gears being the same except 5th which is a 35:29 instead of the 37:27 the QM/016K has. (please feel free to correct me if I got it wrong). Anyways, not being a real gear person I'm assuming the 35:29 is a taller 5th and if so, how is this going to affect my 84N/A? I have recently put the Wilk's chip in it which I am incredibly pleased with by the way. The tranny I have in it now runs fine but it has that "notorious" beer can rattling/buzzing sound when I decelerate and it has gotten louder over time. I seem to recall it has something to do with an idler shaft? Driving in to work tonight I seem to recall cruising at 80mph and the tach was dead on 3K if that helps anyone determine what I may have in there now? I'm in no hurry to swap them out but was hoping to find out if it's compatable or geared to high. Thanks in advance as always!

Pat

Anyone? I know there's gotta be some folks out there that can tell me why 5th gear is different for the QM/016K & QK/016J Transmissions and if the QK will work in my "Wilk'd" 84 N/A?

Thanks!

According to the shop manual the code off your transmission doesn't make sense. It should either be QM (standard) or 8Q (LSD). They are both 016K types. There is no 016J type for the early cars.

The 016J doesn't start until the late model 85's. I think the transmission you have would have the shorter 5th gear. Which is better in my opinion.
