cv joint repacking - how much?
This week i'm going to repack my 944s2 cv joints with grease.Thing is - should you pack the whole of the boot with grease as well as the bearings or does this put the boot under extra pressure when driving. When i did the cv joints on my 924 i remember that the cv boot kit only had a small sachet of grease with it (i applied a little extra but on the bearings).

Take the joint apart (mark the joint orientation)........... check it for wear.
Repack the joint. Don't pack the boot. Its not really lubricating anything. :D |
That is a tricky question. The way I do it, is I make a trianglar cone of grease behind the CV joint itself, if that makes any sense at all. To confuse things more, here's some bad ascii art!
/=| / || / || ----------------|| ----------------|| \ || \ || \=| If that makes any sense, the -'s are the CV shaft, the ||'s are the joint itself (not to scale), and the area between the \'s and /'s and the ||'s is full of grease. I go about 2/3 of the height of the joint back from the joint itself, after packing it into the bearings. It's a little more than most come packed with, but I've never had one failed from being a touch overpacked. |
I had mine done at the dealer earlier this year. I think it was about $45.

If you do clean up and repack the CV's, do mark the side so you can reassemble in the same way and do add grease in boot because the grease will flow and over time that grease will be used in the joint... The amount needed is specified in the factory manual that I can't get to at the moment....
Good luck, it is a messy job, but pretty easy. Just don't strip the head's of the bolts holding the axle's in place...bad karma, if you do... -CKKrause |
One side done, cleaned and repacked - the other side to do today - replaced the bolts with allen head type.Bad knocking sound gone too.
