Turbo S identification

I am going to look at an 88 Turbo S tomorrow. However, the guy mentioned a few things that make me a little suspicious as to whether or not it is a "real" S.

What is the engine identification # for an S?

I know option 758 designates the S version, but I read somewhere that not all S's showed that code.

Any other positive identification characteristics that can be easily verifed?

I just want to be sure its a real "S" before I make any decisions about buying it.

Thanks.....

There are all sorts of different items to look at including suspension, brake calipers, cooler lines, etc.

Probably the easiest item, if you have the car there, is to look at the engine block, if that is original. Stamped on an upper face of the block at the right rear side below the cam tower you will see M44/52. That is a TurboS block. You can see it just looking down from above. May need a flashlight and a rag to clean it off though. The 52 is the key and why some TS owners call the car a 952. Which is incorrect. I think the 952 was the factory designation for right hand drive or something different like that, not the Turbo S.

You can also get the VIN number and have Porsche run it. While I've heard people say that there is a way to tell through the VIN number, I don't think you can without going to Porsche, and I own an '88 Black 951S.

Yep, like IceShark said.

Plus, you can look for the adjustable lower strut perches on the front konis, the big rotors and calipers in the front, the right DME and KLR boxes in the passenger footwell, and the oil cooler loop on the transaxle in the back.

Those are the easiest external cues for a turbo S.

The M44.52 case is the same case as is used on the regular 944 turbo. The M758 code was only used for the 1988 cars. It is the stuff attached to the case that makes it a M44.52 The transmission cooler was an option on all turbos going back to 1986, any 5P or 5 R transmission had it.

Check the front brake caliper - the part number will be 951.351.093.00 (L) and 951.351.094.00 (R)

Any 1988 turbo S will be silver rose metallic with plaid interior.

Any 1989+ 951 is essentially a turbo S - same engine as the 1988 M758 944 Turbo S. No silver rose metallic, no plaid interior.

I respectfully disagree. I own three 88 turbo S cars, and none of them is silver rose with plaid interior.

I have also parted out another seven 88 turbo S cars, and only one of them had the silver rose paint.

That is not true.

Porsche started doing other exterior colors and interior somewhere arounf the middle of the '88 model year. My car was made in June of '88 and was an '88. It is not silver rose and I know it is a Turbo S.

We can make a small wager, or big one, if you would like. I think I have around $400,000 free cash if you would like to make it big.

I stand corrected, it was an option in the last part of 1988.

My bad

Well, I went.....I looked....I didn't buy.

It is NOT an S as advertised. It carries engine code 51..

It is a very clean car, with perfect interior, and polished S wheels.

But not the car I'm looking for. Besides its white...(yuck)!!!

So, the search continues.

this reminds me to tell everyone that there is a 944 turbo S for sale here in J'ville and if anyone is interested i can get some info for you (only if you are at least kinda serious)

i know that this car has jumped around from dealer to dealer because nobody here really wants a 944 i guess (bumpkins) but its actually pretty nice only a small ding on the back pass. quarterpanel and the chip guard stickers are cracked, but not pealing (actually looks kinda sweet, it gives it that marbled look)

oh yeah, its guards as well

Doesn't a TurboS have to have the m030 option?, as well as 220/lsd? Were there '88 non S Turbos WITH 220 and 030? I could easily be wrong...
