Well, need a driver's side mirror (or help fixing mine)...
No physical damage to the outside of the mirror at all, but this morning while on the way to work the driver's side mirror on my '86 951 went "floppy". It seems that whatever provides the resistance for the mirror folding mechanism gave way and now the mirror swings freely in the breeze.
Anyone ever managed to fix one of these or is this something I'll have the privilege of buying from the dealership since I can't find the mirror bodies on Pelican. The guts still work fine, just that the body is loose at the hinge point. I'm assuming that I'll have to pull the interior door panel to get at the mirror's electrical connection too. Advice? Please? Aaron

Hollow bolt that the wires pass through. Use an allen wrench to take the base off of the door. You will see the hollow bolt and spring. Uses the same 12 point bit that is used on the flywheel bolts. However with the wires in the way push them to the side and use a large screwdriver to push the bolt back into place and tighten.
You can find the tool for poping the pins at most good autoparts stores. It's the metric one. Also search this forum for the tool.

A picture. Access the bolt after removing the mirror transmission. If you have to take the base off of the door.

They all look like that from 76 until 92. Remove the glass, then the motor assembly, then disconnect the wiring pins from the connector. Once that is done the allen bolt that holds the mirror on can be loosed and the mirror removed. The door panel does not need removing, all the work is done on the outside of the door. The pic SoCal posted is the underside of the mirror base, and the bolt holds the base and head together.

I figure that if I've got everything apart I might as well take that off and see if I can chase down the small rattle that's in there. It seems like the rest of the car, held together by a bunch of philips-head screws and shouldn't be that bad, just want to be sure that there aren't surprises.

The door panel is easy, but it will be little help for your current mirror problem.
There are a few hidden philips-head screws: - behind the door release handle, hidden behind a plastic tab. - three of them holding the arm rest, from the underside. - two near the top, under small round plastic covers. - unscrew the door lock release. - use a putty knife and work around the edges, to pop the door panel off. - unplug the wire harness to the window switches and speakers. done.
