10-speaker option question

The speakers on my passenger's side are bad. I can't seem to find the right size to replace them, though.

From my measurements the in-door woofer is 5", the in-door midrange is 3". Is this correct? I can't seem to find speakers in these sizes to replace my bad ones. Does anyone have the exact specs on what sizes they should be?

Thanks!

my guess is 4x6

my 84' took 4x6's all around and they sound sweet.

Late-model cars do not use the in-door 4x6 opening... The speakers are in what would normally be the armrest/cargo pouches in the door.

Crap, I wish I had a digital camera to show...

Well I did a quick search at crutchfield.com, aqnd they say that the doors are 6.5". I dont think that is correct. I would think the 5 and 3" would be abour the right size.. you'd have to check some online shops to see if they even sell those size's.

PET lists the speaker PN#s and sizes (atleast i think sizes) for all stock setups, 10 speaker option included.

If you don't have a copy I can send screenshots if needed.

please do livewire... I can't find my PET6 disc here anywhere... I know it's a requirement I have it but I've been using it at the shop when able.

The dealer is the only one I know that carries these sizes. They are not too expensive. I think around $30 for the mid and $50 for the woofer.

Eldorado 11-14-2005 08:06 AM

if they are 5x3 - they're not that hard to find around here.. unfortunately you dont live anywhere around here :p

Brando 11-14-2005 03:21 PM

no no... i dont think I gave the measurements right.

The in-door woofer is 5" in diameter. NOT 4x6M, NOT 5x3, NOT 5¼".

The in-door midrange is 3" in diameter. NOT 3½", NOT 4½", NOT 3x5.

The problem therein is... i can't find speakers in the proper sizes.

Eldorado 11-14-2005 03:34 PM

are the woofer and midrange speakers not side by side?
in my early car, i just replaced the speakers in the front doors... they had a 4" woofer, and a 1" midrange (some would call it a tweeter for being so small)... so i just replaced it with a 4x6 - it's the same size.

but i see your problem.. you would need, effectively, an 8x5.. or even 9x5... they sell those too around here - very common... (that is, if the speakers are side by side.)

I'll take it all apart tomorrow and post pictures so everyone can see the enclosures. I don't think I'm explaining this right. I do apprecieate the input everyone. I just wish it was easier.

They are manufacturer specific sizes. You can put a 5.25 sized speaker in the 5"opening with a little modification (IE: cut a little) and a 3.5" in the 3 inch opening.
On later 968's, they deleted the 3 inch speaker and sealed up the opening.
You have a few options on what to do unless you really want to stay factory. I suggest picking up a component 5.25" set and replace the 5" inthe door, disconnect the 3 inch and replace the tweeter. Just make sure you get a shallow component set or you may run into some clearance problems.

I put a 6.5 " in the door but I had to hack the speaker surround to make it fit. But it's OK as I am just exploring possibilities right now.

You allways have the option of taking them to a speaker shop and having them re-coned. It takes about a week, and most of the time cost less than replacment.

Try looking on E-bay under Kicker. Thats what I put in mine. It has been a while, but I think it was 3 and 51/4.
