Well after many studies of how to replace the rear speakers, I finally decided to leave that alone completely and instead put in some 6x9's in speaker boxes in the rear hatch area.

This turned out to be pretty easy..if you run the wires under the track on the passenger side door, the rest of the wire run is pretty easy (and invisible).

The 6x9's are a HUGE improvement over the 4x6's, even considering they are in boxes and not flush mounted. My boxes are the "standard" grey carpeting, and they look OK..i suppose you could recarpet them to match the interior if you wanted..total installation time was less than 1 hour (including soldering the connections to the radio..AT LAST SOME GOOD SOUND!

Hope you didn't screw the boxes into the rear cargo floor. The fuel tank is right under it.

When I get ready to do this, I'll be using Velcro to attach and secure 6x9 boxes on either side of the spare tire.

Another alternative is to keep the stock speaker setup and add a bazooka bass tube, it has a built in amplifier and adds decent bottom end while the stock stuff takes care of the mid and highs.
It helps if you have a late model head unti which lets you adjust the equalization between the front, rear and sub. The sub was $100 at circuit city and can actually shake the rear hatch.

That's a really good idea WolfeMacleod...my 6x9 boxes are wedged in my storage areas and i can barely hear them cuz of that lol...now that i just made my rear seat speakers work i have 6 speakers bumpin in there...it sounds better now but it will be even better once i do the velcro Did anyone install a subwoofer in any of their 44's?

Yea.. I have 2 audiobahn 10"ers ina ported bass box, 1200w sony amp and a 2 farad capacity (amp and capacitor are mounted to the back of the sub box for a clean installation). Takes up a little more space than a bazooka tube, but still leaves room for cargo. The biggest downside is that it adds about 40lbs of weight to the vehicles rear.

I just laid them in the back, tucked them on either side of the spare tire..the boxes I have are tapered so I don;t think they'll shift around or turn over, and this way i can remove them without a fuss if i want to.

My OEM rear speakers were not wired up at all..or were totally blown..when I hooked up the rear speaker wires to the head I got no sound..not even a static "crackle"..since the next step was to pull the rear speakers, I decided to go the 6x9 route instead.

Got the speaker boxes for $25 on eBay, I really didn't want the giant window-rattling subwoofer (those things give me headaches!)

Tell me whats involved with hooking up a Bazoka, do i have to worry about impedence? any other issues. I just looked on ebay and they are stupid cheap.

It is really worth the trouble to replace the rear side speakers with good units. Even run a bit larger wire. Does not have to be welding cable!!! Note that the door and side panel speakers are a bit exposed to the weather and do not last the life of the car. Not so with the additional ten speaker option. At least not for the door speakers.

Seriously, the first time you stop hard (and your car can stop very hard) you might have 2 6x9 missles.

You need to secure these IMO.

Dave the bazooka needs a 12v power cable (fused, preferred directly from the battery and a ground which can be from the chasis at the rear of the car. Then it needs an rca input from the subwoofer out or line out of the radio, thats it. It automatically turns on and off when it senses the music signal. If you go ebay make sure you get the powered one with the harness as they have non powered units as well. BEST BET: go new from circuit city as there is no shipping and for the price, well new is better. Its model EL8A and comes with straps to secure it and inclides the harness. I had one in my mustang as well but with the small size of the 944 it sounds like a freakin 15" woofer, a great way to enhance any factory setup because its compact. An optional connection is to use the speaker wires as inputs and a 12v signal wire to turn it on and off, the also have an optional remote level switch. No I dont work for the company but its definately a product that I am excited about!

I have one Infinity 10" in a truck box. Rattles a lot without being excessivly loud. I used cabin Gain to my advantage. Also the box is not held down at all and I have never had it move one inch. My tool boxes are another story. My friend has a kenwood "Bass Tube" and it sounds good as well.

I ran with 2 6X9 each in their own angled box in the hatch, unsecured, as well as two bazooka tubes, one on each side. bazooka tubes were next to outside and 6X9's nearer the middle. I never had any problems with them shifting during braking, acceleration or cornering. I even hit .75G on a curve once (G-force meter) and none of it shifted.

my dads SPEC car hits 1.2 ish if I remember correctly. it is insane.
