rear seat back bolts

the previous owner on my car removed the seat backs. I've got the seat back, and I've got two bolts/washers for them... I was wondering if there was an easier way for those bolts to be pushed into the holes for them. I've tried squishing the seat leather in as far as I can.. it just doesn't want to budge.

they dont go the other way, do they? from behind the rear wheel well into the car? the head of the bolt is in the car, right?

granted now that i think about it, i've only tried this with the seats up... if I fold them down, will that make it seasier?

I can get them lined up alright, just getting the clearance to push that bolt through is becoming a chore...

see pictures... any hints will be appreciated.
also, am I missing any hardware? I have a bolt, a nut, and a washer for each side.

It's a lot easier to do if you take the skins off.

The bolts go fron the inside, where you've taken the photo. Looks like you're on the right track. They can be tough - my wife has a way of doing this and I'll ask her about it and get back to you. I'd just muscle the vinyl out of the way with one hand while threading the bolt with the other. Swearing always helps, too...

The "nut" usually sits behind the steering wheel!

The proper bolts for the rear seat are shoulder bolts. Uses two nylon washers if I recall correctly. Tightening a shoulder bolt leaves a calculated bit of play in the assembly. The "nut" is welded into the car.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

hmm
I could just go to home depot and buy a shorter bolt.. might just try that.. hopefully it's long enough to reach the welded nut.

"Shoulder" Like the thing your arm(s) hangs from.

Item #8 in this illustration:

Note that #9 is a nylon washer.

i know socal

but my problem is that the bolts i got were too long to fit between the seat and the hole to put them in..
hence needing to find some "shorter" bolts.

I got them from a member of this forum actually.. he just threw them in with stuff i was buying already... and they're just regular steel bolts with nuts attached... maybe he gave me the wrong pieces.. who knows..

Should be someone here that has removed their back seat and has the proper bolts in a junk drawer. I might have some off of the 86 I parted out. Have to check the catch alls in the garage.
