Leaking Transmission...
Hey everyone...
Yesterday was a nice sunny day so I drove to a friends house about 1 1/2 hours away. Upon arrival I noticed that my transmission was leaking fluid. One drop for every 4-6 seconds. This seems to be happening because the transmission is getting too hot and expanding and the fluid is coming out of the seal. Is there anything that I can do to prevent this? As far as I understand the coolant in the engine bay also cools the transmission but when I opened the hood the outside of the coolant reservoir was pretty hot. The transmission was apparently rebuilt before the previous owner sold it to me.

IF you have an automatic, the transmission fluid does circulate through the radiator to cool it. If the coolant reservoir was hot, that's because it's suppose to be. Probably around the 180 degree mark which is pretty hot. If your coolant temperature gauge reports normal, then your transmission fluid is probably okay as well. When the transmission fluid gets hot, then yes, it expands but it doesn't cause a seal to leak. Only a bad seal will cause a seal to leak. Replace it.

Yes, it's an automatic transmission. How much do you estimate replacing the seal would cost me?

Not sure Kevin. Send an email to Britwrench and he'll let you know. Don't you live in the Seattle area?
