944 runs with fuel pump disconnected. How is that possible?
1983 944 runs with fuel pump disconnected. Cannot understand what process is transferring fuel from tank to engine. Engine will not crank with fuel pump connected. After engine warms up fuel pump can be connected. Fuel consumption is extremely excessive. Fuel pump has been tested and is good.

Fuel injected cars cannot run with the pump disconnected and not producing pressure. Sounds to me like the fuel pressure regulator has failed and allowing excessive pressure, making the engine run too rich.
Try checking the fuel pressure with a gauge. If the regulator has failed then also replace the damper too. Before SoCal says anything: Have you replaced the timing and balance shaft belts, fuel pump relay and are up to date with the maintenance?

The fuel pressure regulator and the damper are new Bosch OEM replaced a week ago.
Trust me the car runs without the fuel pump connected. I have totally disconnected the wires at the pump. It is not running but the car will crank and run every time as long as the fuel pump is not connected. |

The question is: Where is the real fuel pump.

Look at the bright side, atleast you don't have to replace an expensive fuel pump. Anything else un hooked? Check to see if the timing belt is still there and the water pump. If we could get these cars to run with out these think of all the hassle this would save.

If your car runs without a fuel pump, Ferry Porsche is going to have to visit your car and perform an exorcism. In the interim, better not look at it funny, nobody wants a 944 with a vindictive attitude!!! P

The car will drive down the road as long as you do not accelerate too quickly.

Turns out this could be totally possible. After doing some indepth research I was able to turn up a rare option code M666. This is the key component omission option. I'm going to check a couple cars that I have around that are missing some key parts. from what I've read this option isn't specific to any one part and may include but isn't limited too trans, cylinder head, clutch disk, oil pan, wheels, and fuel tank. Who would have thunk?

I'm going with Socal on this one. If it runs there is another fuel pump somewhere.

And FWIW. option code M666 was only available on pre-1980 924's and 931's.
