Wheelspacer Problem

I have several sets of bolt-on wheelspacers but none seem to fit the front of the 944/951 cars. They work fine in the rear.
They are both hub and wheel centric.
They will not go on all the way on the front.
Anybody run into this before ?

Front brakes/spindles been replaced? If the fit on the front I would think they should fit on the rear. Unless the fronts aren't original somehow.

I have 4- 944's here and they don't work on either one.
Also tried 4 different spacers .
The back works fine.
It is the same on early and late cars

I have 1 1/2" spacers all around. On mine, the front ones take a bit of "convincing to get on".... i.e. hammer. They don't just slide on.

Did you try tapping them on?

Yes , but they will not clear the dustcap for the wheelbearing.
It is like the recess that fits on the hub is not deep enough.

Ohhh.

If I remember correctly. The back of the spacer needs to have a chamfered edge to fit the 944 front. Something to do with the hub.

That might be why they fit on the back and not the front. And a 911 spacer wouldn't work because it may not have that.

Ive had two different bolt on spacer sizes on the front of my 944, two on the rear - no fitment issues at all. (.5, 1", 1.5")

Buy all mine from Better Bodies Motorsports. (I think Vertex sells the same ones)

Yes, the Dust cap and hub stick out a little you need to machine some of the material away. I took mine to a machine shop and had them machine away some of the material to essentially make the hub centric hole "deeper" so the dust cap and hub would fit. Do not let them increase the diameter of the hole or you will loose the hub centricity which can cause vibration if everthing is not centered. I've had mine for over three year now and every thing is fine no vibrations or wheel bearing problems. I even use them for Drivers Ed, but to be safe I check the torque on the inner lugs frequently but none have loosened up.

It cost me $15 per spacer but prices may differ depending on who you get. The depth that you have to machine is equal to or slighty more than the space between the back plate of the spacer and the hub. Most machine shops can do this work so long as they have a large enough chuck to hold the spacer.

Good Luck!

Just while the thread is here,

May I ask what the applications you all are using the spacers for? Are you fitting different rims with wider tires? If so any fender work (rolling?)

Just curious..
