Helping a friend

My friend has a 96 jetta 5spd. His speedo just stopped working. Sometimes his RPM guage works but most of the time it is out too. Any ideas? I think it could be an electrical problem?

SOunds like a electrical problem too me. Time to buy a repair manual and check out the wiring diag. Or pull the gauge clister and start playing around ;-)

First i would check the connector on top of the tranny and make sure its plugged in. I mistakingly disconnected it once while replaced the reverse light switch and forgot to reconnect it.

Check the fuses....

If none of that works pull the cluster and check for disconnected or loose wires.
