beefed up 944 engines

Anyone have any info on beefed up 944 na engines? (like a 3.0 race engine or something?)

Ive decided to not go the turbo route for a track car, and short of dropping in an LT1, what are the options? Budget is not a problem. Oh, and anyone ever run 12inch rears without a wider rear flare?

Thanks

Dave

A quick serch on here will bring up many results. Many are you typical things i.e. shaving the head, headers, High flow cat or test pipe, Maxtronic tuning.. The list can go on.

Thanks

How long would you like to go between rebuilds? :)

I built a few "all out" 944 engines in the past, but they were designed to run 4-5 1/4 mile runs, then be completely rebuilt!

There is a bunch of stuff that can be done, Its just alot of money. If your staying NA then I would sleeve to a 3.0 and get some custom CR JE pistons like 11.1, Switch to a MAF setup, Port/Polish 5 angle valve job, Light wieght crank and flywheel, Maybe some custom rods. I would go stand alone DME, Full race tuned header, and A real aggresive cam

We have been running a 3 liter NA engine in SCCA GT2 for the past several years and a 2.5 liter for about 10 years before. We have blown our share of engines and pretty much know what to do to make them live but as said before, expensive. I started working with Dave Finch when we ran the 2.5 liter than changed to Jon Andruk at Circle Performance for the 3.0 liter, telephone 508 580 5844. Let me know if you would like more information.

am914, I would love to know more info on the motors you built and what you have learned

am914 06-20-2007 03:04 PM

Hi fast924s. You summed it up well in your earlier post. I started with a 968 block and head. Sleeved the block, reworked the crank, custom rods, custom pistons for around 11.5 cr. Used the 968 because the head breaths better but still did the valve work and touched up the intakes. Mechanical lifters. Custom ground cams. Weber DCOE 55 side draft carbs and single airbox with front end scoop. Modified the pan and block for dry sump -- got that right after 15 years but dry sump pans are now available. Assuming about a 15% loss for the drive train I figure about 375 hp. I'm not sure we could do better upper end hp with fuel injection but probably would profile the torque better. Jon Andruk did the heads and prepared the block for us. He knows the details. We did pretty well with the 2.5 liter but the same issues plague both displacemets. I don't have the hp figures readily available for the 2.5 but could dig them out if you are interested. The 944/968 crank is rpm limited even if well prepared. The heads can be made reliable for racing.

Thanx for the info am914, Im in the process of build my motor, gonna try and hit around 175-190hp NA, would love 200 but I dont think Im gonna hit that on 10.2 to 1 cr. If you could pull the numbers/specs for the 2.5 that would be sweet but if you cant no harm done

am914 06-20-2007 04:34 PM

OK, will look next time at the garage. I know over 200. Still have the 2.5 head and cam available but hadn't thought about parting with them.

fast924S 06-20-2007 04:44 PM

Well now, I might be very intrested in the head and cam if you should decide to part with them ;-) Is the head a 2.5L head thats been modded or is it the 968 head??? specs on the cam??

No, you wont hit that with 10.2:1 comp. You will not hit that with an 8V head either.

I built my 944S to 180WHP. It included:

4 into 1 headers
Custom full exhaust system
MAF conversion
Custom worked Intake Manifold
Bored Stock t-body w/ custom butterfly
Custom tuning via programmable emulator

I believe I could have stretched it to 200WHP with cams and head work, but that was a 16V engine. I had plans for a variocam conversion, but sold the car before I got that far.

I think I can get her to 175-180 NA, Only time will tell.

Blondie dont worry nitrous is in the works, But thats after a build to 175-180 hp. Hoping to be around 225 or so with a wet nitrous kit

Jon Milledge builds 185BHP 944 8V n/a motors.....know how much they cost? $60K

Blondie 06-20-2007 08:14 PM

lol I was kidding with the nitrous :p but if you wanna go that route, power to ya!

"Jon Milledge builds 185BHP 944 8V n/a motors.....know how much they cost? $60K"

LOL! 'Nuff said..

fast924S 06-20-2007 08:22 PM

Thats great  , Im still gonna try, its only 25- 30 more hp which can be done, Head work, Cam, ect... its all in the works, lol been slowly collecting parts for about 4 years for the na build. Just cuz its a Porsche doesnt mean it cant be made better, Hell these things where made slower from porsche.

As far as nitrous, I have used it before, I love it, If tuned right and setup right it can be alot of fun

am914 06-21-2007 01:47 AM

Jgp0rsche, my experience is in line with you. I don't know what can be done at 10.5 cr and with 8v head. Sorry, I should have mentioned all my experience is with 16v. I think 180 RWH is in the right range for 2.5s without head work and cams. OTOH it sounds like you have a really nice set up and you would find hp with custom cams. Would you care to say how fast you were able to spin the engine reliably?

fast924s, my head, cams and associated parts are 16v. Send me an email if you would like more information.

Techno Duck 06-21-2007 04:28 AM

968 engine.... Porsche already did all the development for you.. :) 3.0L, Variocam, 246hp.
