odd noise from transaxle

when sitting at idle, i hear a slight squeaking noise from the rear of my car, i think it is coming from the transaxle. the noise speeds up as i rev the engine and slows as it returns to idle. i have an 87 944S and it is the original tranny with 87k on it...anyone have this happen to them or know what the noise was? its not the exhaust, it is very solid so.....i'm in question...

If you are sitting at idle, nothing is moving back there. Is the exhaust hitting against something. Check heat shields above exhaust.

Hope this helps,
Jon

Nothing squeaks back there while in idle. Maybe it rattles? If it does, it's the 5th gear in the mainshaft at the end of the transaxle. Try pressing the clutch pedal and see if it disappears. If it does, that's it. I am not saying it's normal but it is common in these transaxles.

no the exhaust isn't the culprit. its coming from inside the transaxle......can't exactly place the noise but will look further into it while in the garage later today...i will try the clutch thing today and let you know bazar01. so not really any serious known problems of these transaxles? i will also check fluid level as well..................

If your foot is off the clutch and the tranny is in neutral, the driveshaft is spinning inside the torque tube. You may have a noisy torque tube bearing.
