'88 944

With finding a new good head for my 924 turbo almost impossible, i've decided to shelve it and join the 944 crowd. I was actually shopping for an '89 944 2.7L, an S2 or a 6 spd 968 but this one was so tidy I had to go have a look, especially as I knew this car and it being 5 mins down the road.

Just had a look at this beautiful old 944. its an '88 with 111,000km. its very original with everything you'd expect with those km's. the seller has owned it since '96/80,000kms and the owner before that bought new.

cant remember what colour they call this... sage green metallic? with black interior and blue porsche script cloth seats. drivers side bolster is showing signs of wear but otherwise the interior is perfect including the dash. It also has no sunroof.

It was maintained by a reputable porsche dealer under the first owner. Said dealer installed air con before they sold it on to the current owner. This owner took it to another reputable porsche worshop who i've dealt with quite a bit in the past.

its had some work but not much. new cambelt at 66,000kms, some minor work to reduce tappet noise, new shocks up front. the underside looks new with a bit road grime from irregular use. When the head was opened up for said work the porsche workshop said it was like new with almost no wear.

waterpump and clutch are original. the tyres are good dunlops with good tread.

it drives really good, feels tight and stops on a dime. never driven one with power steering before and that feels good also.

so, is there anything I should be careful of with a 944 that doesn't get used everyday?

Nice car you picked up!

I would suggest keeping an eye on the waterpump and timing/balance belt. They're coming up on your maintenance schedule.

Have fun, you'll love the 944.

Did the PO let the car sit for a while before you got it? If the car has not been used for a while then the belts should probably be replaced just so nothing really bad happens.

Does it leak any fluids?

Even if it doesn't show signs of fluid leak, keep an eye out. I would regularly check the oil level and coolant levels until you are positive nothing is disappearing.

Do you have any pictures of the engine?

Looks like a nice car. No sunroof, interesting.

hi , sorry i should have explained better. this guy loves this car and is selling im sure because hes getting too old to get in and out of it. he drives it on sunny days and is keeps it garaged.

I checked out his garage when we went for a drive. the garage floor was well used but no drips or anything. i had a could look around the head and block for leaks and signs of cleaning up also.

heres some pics from his ad but no engine pics sorry:

my stepdad wrenches his '83 944 and used to track an '86 so will make sure im getting a safe deal and check it out also.

might be able to knock some $$ off for the clutch and waterpump though he was aware they were original when he was explaining its history.

I have 16" 930 fuchs with fresh rubber on my turbo so im planning on swapping the wheels over.

Very nice colour! My wife would love it...

Meantime, keep your eyes open for a 951 or 968 engine to swap into the 931, maybe?

Very NICE! right hand drive, euro bumpers, no sunroof.... although, I heard the ones with sunroof are a little stiffer on corners due to the rolled edges acting like "ruffles have ridges" any truth on that?

hi guys, thanks for the comments, i bought it today! only thing my stepdad could fault it on is the original clutch would need to be changed with the next year or 2 and that it also needs adjustment- too much travel.

dont know but i've read that also, but i have also read that theres less weight up high... either way i like the lesser complication of not having one, my 931 doesnt have one either.
S2/968 engines are hard to come by down my way, but i am currently looking at a 2.7L 944 engine ( the RoW '89) but the guy is asking too much for it.
