944 shift knobs?
Quick and easy question: Where can I find an aftermarket shift knob that will fit my 944? I'm growing less and less fond of my stocker and it's mal-fitting 5-speed plaque every day, and I can't seem to find any of the clip-fastened ones like Porsche uses.

This is not really the answer you're after, just unsolicited info...
It's hard to improve upon the functional design of the factory Porsche shift knob/handle. As you will quickly realize if/when you use an aftermarket shift knob, the OE unit very effectively isolates very harsh vibrations and noise. I tried aftermarket shift knobs (MOMO) but eventually went back to the OE shifter w/a short shift kit. YMMV |
There are aftermarket ones with the rubber isolators (at least I think that's how they're set up)
go here: http://www.9xauto.com/944.html Look under interior > custom shifters. There are lots of aftermarket ones available...need an adapter though, and they will vibrate and make noise if you don't take extensive measures to prevent it. |
I put a Momo knob on, it looks great, but yes, it does transmit more vibration, but not enough to be a problem

Hmm, any more vibration coming through and I think my hand might explode whenever I touch the shifter... I'll keep that in mind.
Still, 2 seconds of harsh vibration every now and then vs permanent visual improvement, I dunno. *Edit* - good links guys, thanks much. I might actually just be able to get a better 5-speed plaque for the top off of 9x auto, saving me oodles of monnies, LoL. |

I think the harsh vibration is referring to the shifter itself.
On the stock shifter, if the rubber bushings inside are gone or damage it will vibrate a LOT at certain RPMS. The non-stock shifter I have vibrates a little, in a similar way, at around 2000rpm when the engine is pulling hard. |
Nope, I still have perfectly intact bushings inside the shifter.
I get a high-frequency buzz-vibration at about 3400-3600 rpm, which I have a suspicion might be balance shafts or clutch (though both were serviced by a Porsche mechanic recently...) as suggested in other topics I've read on the subject. At any rate, it's quite different to the low-frequency shaking I get at 1000rpm from what I know to be bad motor mounts. |
