After a lot of grief I have decided to sell my 944. Any help as far as input on an estimate of worth would be greatly appreciated. I have to make room for a new addition.

Basicly:
1984 944 N/A delivered in Europe (US car) w/ sport suspension and LSD, power steering, sport interior (low bolster seats). Shipped from France in 1985. I am the second owner (bought in 91 w/ 56,000). Currently 84,000. $12.5K in work done two years ago w/ 90% of that in parts. My next door neighbor is a factory Porsche Master Mechanic and helped tremendously with knowledge, specialty tools, and labor. I am a Mechanical Engineer and have had 5 911s as well as a ton of other weird stuff. It was done right. I have too much to remember much less list but essentially the highlights:

Guards Red w/ Black leather. Hood painted prior to my buying it. Right Side Door and Rear Quarter painted after I T-boned it in our driveway w/ an Astro Van. Absolutely no rust anywhere. Entire car was soundproofed when the stereo went in.

Fiberwerks F&R bumpers. Relocated fogs, stock bumpers go with the car. the car looks fantastic. Custom light wiring harness, h4s, etc New windshield.

Ground Control adjustable front springs, rear lowered w/ concentric bolt. Turbo F&R sway bars, Koni Yellows, new wheel bearings, ball joints, control arms, poly bushings, rebuilt calipers, new Brembo Rotors, rebuilt Torque Tube, new Sachs Clutch, 17" Mille Miglia C2 copies w/ new Kumho 205X45X17 Front and 255X35X17 Rear. Wheels are made for the early narrow cars and do not require spacers.

New main bearings, rings, widefire headgasket, rebuilt head w/ new valves, all new belts, tensioners, all seals, etc. MSDS ceramic headers, mini-cat, stock rear muffler (sounds great). flowed and powdercoated intake, throttle cam, new wires, distributor, hot coil, Lindsey rising rate regulator, billet aluminum rail, new injectors, starter, rebuilt alternator, battery, water pump, radiator temp sensor ALL Vacuum lines and fittings, reprogrammed AFM w/ K&N cone. I have a new MAF w/ controller that will come w/ the car. 2ga battery cable installed. Radiator flushed. Oil changed every 3K from new. Schnell rear short shift and Speedforce front short shift. A/C converted to R134 and works great.

Front leather very very good. Rear leather looks like it has never been sat in. Dash cap, new back carpet as the old one had speaker holes. stock carpets very very good. Door panels essentially mint. White guages w/ new VDO oil pressure gauge and sender and new VDO clock. All trim pieces and screws are perfect and as new stock. Steering wheel looks new. New MOMO shift knob. All the little switches and lights were replaced w/ stock new Porsche parts.

Killer 944 stereo w/ Polk 2 way plates in the front, Polk 5X7 coaxes in the normal side position. Polk subwoofers under rear carpet in wheel wells in custom enclosures. Blaupunkt AM-FM-CD w/ (1) SONY 250W sub amp and one Lanzar 200 watt amp for the satellites. Power Antenna, Electronic crossover, all Monster Cable wiring. Remote radar detector. The installation is very very professional and is invisible.

I have the original sales order, 84 literature, factory sunroof cover, spare, compressor, manual, car cover, and a bunch of misc stuff that goes with it.

This has been a great car and I have owned it longer than any car I have ever had. I just have a replacement coming and I have an understanding w/ the wife on the number of vehicles I can have. A Gemballa slope nose 930 is available from a friend of mine who was diagnosed w/ MS a couple years ago and my ML55 isn't going anywhere.
I appreciate any feedback. I was thinking $8500-$9,000 but I know it will take the right buyer to understand what it is.

I would appreciate any input. Thanks again and you guys have been a tremendous help putting this little car together and keeping it going.

Steve

Jim:

I can't either. I weighed it a lot of different ways and realized:

(1) It's cheaper than building a bigger garage
(2) It's cheaper than getting a new wife

Who knows, if I can't get some reasonable number for it I guess it will not go anywhere. It's pretty tough to try and establish a price much less get it. I still would like to drive it up to Chicago on one last road trip.

I'm sadly in the same boat.

As for pricing, I just took what I wanted for the car and added 10% to give myself some negotiating room. Maybe that was too much as I haven't gotten any serious bites.

Best of luck.

Its a great looking car, I think the biggest challenge is going to be finding the "right" buyer. Ultimately I think you are looking for a current or previous owner of a 944 who will recognize and appreciate all the hard work that has gone into the car. listing it here, Rennlist or on the PCA site might be your best bet.

You can't sell it yet man. I'm almost ready to put my engine back in and need your car for refrences when I can't figure out what goes where! lol

I'm with Dave on this. With that price point it's going to be difficult to find a buyer. Espcially when there is a turbo in our area going for less then that. Going to take a buyer that knows these cars and what it takes to get/keep them on the road.

some people dont want to deal with everything that a 951 brings, including the power.
I can see, in this case, why a pristine 944 could fetch more than a 951 if it finds the right buyer.

e

You have to find someone that really LOVES 944s at that price. I have a WELL maintained (if a little shabby) 944 i'm selling that I get lowballed all the time since it's not shiny - on ebay now. People are weird buyers. Good luck.

I'm really just trying to get a feel for the worth. If it is not worth mid 8s than I'll just keep it. I have never seen another one like it. I have convinced my wife that the 930 should be better on gas mileage w/ the sloping hood. I did not tell her about the twin turbos. I will post a couple pics of it this week as it will probably arrive late this week.

wow, what a nice car.......
I will buy that car in SA for $12000, a good early 944 here, without any major work will sell for $5000 - $9000
Pity we cannot import left hand drive vehicles, and of course the transport costs will be prohibitive.
Rather loose the car than the wife....

Someone will appreciate all of the work you did. It is a steal at your asking price. I wouldn't sell it for anything less.

Face it. Could you find a cheaper 944, certainly but................... what do you need to do belts, tires, brakes - this stuff adds up. Wanna replace a cracked dash? that will cost you. Powder coat cam cover? Ain't cheap either.

I would part it first before I 'gave' it away. What a shame that would be.

Good Luck Steve.

I waited a year, and walked with 6,000 selling my 84 944. It was in 99% perfect condition, with 96k miles on it. I'm still amazed i got that much, but with time, your car should bring that much. - Steven

Steve, I think your pricing is very very fair. I need to come up and see the car before you sell it. I am gone this week to Michigan, but the next week, if nice, I am getting the red P-car out to get ready for summer driving. I will give you a call.

Sure you don't want to trade 1 pristine '84 944 for two '87 924S's?

I think the asking price is fair although consider the obvious:

You're trying to sell an old sports car at a time when (1) we're going into a recession and (2) gas is going to $5-a-gallon, probably for good.

This is not a good time to be selling.

That said, that is a gorgeous 944. Best of luck!
